About half of Dell employees who were forced to choose between quitting remote work or giving up promotion reportedly gave up on promotion

Remote work has become widespread in various companies due to the pandemic of 2020, but the movement to return to office work is gradually growing. Dell has also announced a policy that 'remote workers will not be eligible for promotion' and is trying to bring employees back to the office, but it has been reported that about half of the employees have chosen to give up promotion and continue remote work.

Dell has previously voiced its support for remote work. In 2022, CEO Michael Dell said, 'The perception that working in an office is advantageous in terms of promotion, performance, engagement and salary is just one of the myths of hybrid work that combines remote work and the office,' and appealed that employees can choose between remote work and office work.

However, in March 2024, Dell suddenly announced that remote workers would not be promoted.

Dell will classify all employees into two categories, 'remote workers' or 'hybrid workers,' from May 2024 onwards, and those classified as remote workers will not be eligible for promotion or job title changes. To be recognized as a hybrid worker, employees must come to the office at least 39 days in a three-month period, an average of three days a week.

However, internal Dell data reviewed by Business Insider revealed that roughly 50% of Dell employees chose to forgo promotions and continue working remotely, undermining Dell's plans to bring employees back to the office, Ars Technica reported.

Many of those interviewed by Business Insider admitted that they were considering moving to another company that continues to work remotely. The reasons cited for choosing to continue working remotely included 'Moving to remote work gave me more free time and reduced financial strain,' 'local offices were closed after the pandemic,' 'I'm not interested in promotion,' and 'My team is distributed across offices around the world, and there's no point in going to the office because we'll be calling on Zoom anyway.'

Additionally, employees who have chosen to work as hybrid workers by commuting to the office are working in offices that are largely empty and making video calls to those who are also working in offices that are empty.

Executives of companies looking to return to face-to-face offices argue that working together in the same physical space allows for greater collaboration and innovation. Ars Technica said, 'Research on this topic offers a variety of views, but there seems to be some consensus that remote work leads to a very gradual decline in productivity. For example, a study from the Stanford University Economic Policy Institute found that productivity declines by around 10%, although the cost savings of remote work may offset some of that.'
