According to Google, it is using AI to expand the number of supported languages, and the large-scale language model ' PaLM 2 ' has made a major contribution to this expansion.

The languages that have been added to the list are spoken by over 614 million people worldwide, which is roughly 8% of the world's population. While some of the languages are major languages with over 100 million speakers, others are spoken by small indigenous communities. In particular, the number of African languages has increased by the largest amount ever.

The major languages now supported are as follows:

Afar : A tonal language spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia. Of all the languages added this time, this was the one that received the most contributions from the volunteer community.
Cantonese : One of the most requested languages to be added to Google Translate to date, Cantonese has a lot of overlap with Mandarin in written form, making it difficult to find data to train models.
Manx : A Celtic language spoken on the Isle of Man. It was on the brink of extinction with the death of the last native speaker in 1974, but there has been a revival of the language across the island and it has several thousand speakers.
Nko : The standard language of the 'Mande' language family used in West Africa. It was invented in 1949 as a common language to integrate various dialects.
Punjabi (Shamukhi script) : In Pakistan, the constitution stipulates that Urdu is the national language and English is the official language, but in reality Punjabi is said to be the most widely used language.
Tamazight (Amazigh) : A Berber language spoken throughout North Africa. There are many dialects, but the written script is generally mutually intelligible. It is written in both the Latin and Tifinagh scripts, both of which are supported by Google Translate.
Tok Pisin : An English-based creole language used as a lingua franca in Papua New Guinea.

Google has also announced the '1000 Languages Initiative' to build AI models to support the 1000 most spoken languages in the world.
