However, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a regular at breaking Apple-related leaks, reported that Apple rejected Meta's request a few months ago to integrate its AI chatbot, Llama, into the iPhone.
According to Bloomberg, Apple and Meta have not discussed a partnership and only had a brief meeting in March 2024. The two companies have not yet reached a formal stage of discussion, and Apple has no plans to integrate Meta's Llama. The talks between Apple and Meta came at a time when Apple was starting to hold talks with OpenAI and Google about entering into AI partnerships.
According to a person familiar with the matter, Apple ended its partnership with Meta because it felt that Meta's privacy practices were not strict enough. Apple has been critical of Meta (formerly Facebook)'s privacy practices for years , but integrating Llama into the iPhone would be a major departure from that approach.
In addition, some believe that the partnership with Meta did not go through because Apple considers OpenAI's ChatGPT to be a better chatbot than Meta's Llama. In addition, Gurman pointed out that the reason Apple is planning to partner with Google on AI may be due to the fact that, in addition to performance, 'Apple and Google have a partnership to set Google search as the default search engine in Safari.'
Apple is also reportedly in talks with AI startup Anthropic to integrate chatbots into Siri, with the company's AI also set to be rolled out from the second half of 2024.
Although the partnership between Apple and OpenAI does not involve monetary exchange, Apple plans to generate revenue for OpenAI by allowing paid ChatGPT users to access the subscription via iOS. If the paid subscription is paid for via the App Store, Apple will also receive a share of the revenue as a commission.
