There is a bug in Windows 10 where an 'Open' dialog box appears when trying to launch an app

Microsoft has reported that when right-clicking on apps such as 'Calculator' installed in Windows 10, a dialog box 'Choose how to open this file' is displayed instead of launching the app. Microsoft plans to fix this in a future update.

Microsoft says bug causes Windows 10 apps to display Open With dialogs

Windows apps have a feature that allows you to execute tasks for those apps by right-clicking on their icons in the Start menu or taskbar.

For example, if you pin the calculator app to the taskbar and right-click the icon, you can directly open functions such as 'Scientific Calculator' and 'Graph Calculator'.

Microsoft has reported that when trying to use these tasks on devices that have the April 2024 update KB5036979 applied, a file open dialog may be displayed instead of the task.

According to Microsoft, the issue occurs in Microsoft Teams, the new Outlook for Windows , and Snip and Sketch.

In addition, IT news site BleepingComputer reported that 'similar issues occur in all Windows apps that have task shortcuts,' and confirmed that the calculator also displays a file open dialog box.

When this bug occurs, the task will not be executed properly, so you will need to open the app and operate it manually. However, as far as BleepingComputer tried, there was no particular problem with the operation, and the app could be used without any problems by closing the dialog.

'The necessary fixes have been identified and are in the works, and will be provided soon in the upcoming Windows 10 22H2 update,' Microsoft said.

Apart from the issue with Windows 10, there is also an issue with the Microsoft Photos app not starting on Windows 11. Specifically, if you update the Microsoft Photos app (version 2024.11050.29009.0 or higher) from the Microsoft Store after June 4, 2024, a spinning circle appears and then disappears.

If you have the process monitoring tool Procmon (Process Monitor) installed on your device, you may also receive an access denied error when closing a process.

Microsoft also stated that they are 'working to resolve this issue and will provide an update in an upcoming release.'
