Cadence exhibits optical communication device compatible with PCIe 7.0, capable of ultra-high-speed communication of 128GT/s

As work on the development of the ultra-high-speed communications standard '

PCIe 7.0 ' with a data rate of 128 GT/s progresses, Cadence exhibited a demo model of a PCIe 7.0-compatible optical communications device capable of communication at 128 GT/s.

PCIe 7.0 is still in the planning stages at the time of writing, but it has already been shown that the data rate will be up to 128GT/s and the bidirectional transfer speed will be up to 512GB/s in a 16-lane configuration. An overview of PCIe 7.0 version 0.5, released in April 2024, can be found in the following article.

Although PCIe 7.0 is still in the formulation stage, hardware manufacturers are working on developing PCIe 7.0-compatible devices. Cadence exhibited at the PCI-SIG Developers Conference 2024, held June 12-13, 2024, and exhibited a demonstration model of an optical communication device that supports PCIe 7.0 and achieves ultra-high-speed communication of 128GT/s.

The demo machine exhibited by Cadence is shown below. The demo machine operated stably for two days during the exhibition, attracting the attention of many visitors.

The PCIe 7.0 specification is scheduled to be finalized in 2025, and PCIe 7.0 conformance testing was originally scheduled to begin in 2027. However,

it was reported in June 2024 that for some reason the start of conformance testing has been postponed to 2028.
