The 1839 Awards is a photography competition that accepts professional and amateur photographs. The winner of the grand prize will receive $3,000, and winners in each category will receive international media exposure and gallery exhibitions.

The 1839 Awards had a variety of categories, including 'animal photography,' 'nature photography,' 'aerial photography,' 'nude photography,' and 'architectural photography,' and some of them were for 'AI-generated images.' Photographer Miles Astley submitted a 'real photo taken with a camera' to the AI-generated image category of the 1839 Awards. As a result, he won both the bronze award by the judges and the voting award by the general public.

Below is the photo that Astley posted to the 1839 Awards. It's a strange image that looks like a brain with legs, but this is a real photo of a flamingo scratching its stomach, not an AI image.

After posting the photo, Astray called for votes on X (formerly Twitter) and

Instagram .

As a result of the judging, Astley's photo won a bronze award and also received the voting award.

After the award was announced, Astley confessed to the organizers that his work was not an AI-generated image. As a result, Astley's award was rescinded and other works were awarded the bronze and voting prizes.

Regarding photo contests and AI-generated images, in 2023, an AI-generated image was selected as the overall winner in the creative category at the Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA) , a photo contest supported by Sony, and Astley was concerned about the situation in which AI-generated images were evaluated alongside human works. In response to his photo winning the AI-generated image category, Astley said, 'We have proven that the validity of human-created content has not been lost, that humans, as interpreters of Mother Nature, can beat machines, and that creativity and emotion are not just a string of numbers.'

In addition, Mr. Astley said that he is not dissatisfied with the withdrawal of the award and fully supports the organizers' decision. After the withdrawal of the award, Mr. Astley received a message from Lily Fierman, co-founder of the 1839 Awards, saying, 'I hope that (Mr. Astley's work winning the AI-generated image category) will bring a message of hope to many photographers who are concerned about the influence of AI.'
