'Mr. Musk knowingly and intentionally created an offensive and unacceptable work environment by introducing vulgar and sexually charged photos, memes and comments into the workplace that were offensive to women and the LGBTQ+ community,' the former SpaceX employees said in court filings in California.
The plaintiffs then began to be harassed by other colleagues who imitated Musk's behavior on X (formerly Twitter). Specifically, senior engineers would repeatedly refer to machine parts as '
Unable to tolerate this workplace, the plaintiffs jointly wrote a letter in 2022 expressing their concerns about SpaceX's corporate culture. The plaintiffs were subsequently fired from SpaceX, which they claim was retaliation by Musk.
According to the lawsuit, SpaceX's human resources department initially encouraged Musk to first investigate the workplace issues, but Musk responded, 'Nah, just fire him,' the lawsuit states.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has also demanded an apology from SpaceX for the firings.
Attorney Laurie Burgess, representing the plaintiffs, said in a statement: 'Musk believes he is not above the law and eight of our brave clients stood up to him and were fired for doing so. We look forward to holding Musk accountable for his actions in court.'
Meanwhile, SpaceX and Musk did not respond to media requests for comment.
Musk has long been known for creating habits and an atmosphere in his workplace that mock certain people. For example, in 2023, Tesla employees were accused of sharing private videos of customers internally and making fun of them.

The Wall Street Journal also reported on June 11, 2024 that Musk had a sexual relationship with a woman who was a college student and more than 20 years younger than him and who had joined SpaceX as an intern, and that he had asked another female employee who was a flight attendant at SpaceX to give birth to a child.
