Intel plans to transport 415 tons of cargo at 16km per hour to its new factory, local authorities say, 'This will have a significant impact on traffic in the area.'

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has announced plans to transport a total of approximately 916,000 pounds (approximately 415 tons) of machines to the two semiconductor manufacturing facilities 'Ohio One Campus' that Intel is building in Ohio, USA, from June 16 to 23, 2024.

Intel 'super load' to move through central Ohio starting Sunday

Intel is investing $28 billion (approximately 4.39 trillion yen) to build its Ohio One Campus, and is bringing in semiconductor manufacturing equipment from time to time. Intel has recently announced that it will transport autonomous air processors called 'cold boxes' that are necessary for semiconductor manufacturing.

There are four trucks involved in the transportation of the cold boxes, with a total weight of 916,000 pounds loaded on them. The size of one container covering the cold box is 23 feet x 20 feet x 280 feet (about 7 meters x about 6 meters x about 85 meters), which is super large, and the speed during transportation is limited to 16 km per hour and it is transported carefully.

The cold box shipment will require detailed planning under the supervision of ODOT. The cold box shipment was originally

scheduled for February 2024 , but was postponed due to the sheer volume of work involved.

Matt Bruning, a spokesman for ODOT, said, 'The trucks that transport the cold boxes have a lot of moving parts and are not simply moved from point A to point B. Transporting a huge load requires a lot of planning, coordination and analysis.' In fact, ODOT has been selecting routes for several months, including choosing bridges and roads that will not be affected by the transportation of heavy loads. In addition, measures such as moving power lines that may interfere with transportation underground have also been taken.

Based on this meticulous plan, four trucks loaded with cold boxes will depart from Manchester, Ohio on June 16, 2024, stop in West Portsmouth, Lucasville, Waverly, and other locations along the way, and are scheduled to arrive at the OhioOne campus on June 23, 2024.

ODOT advised local drivers to 'avoid routes when cargo is being transported, as this transport will have a significant impact on local traffic.' In addition, concerned that onlookers may cause further traffic congestion, ODOT issued the following advice: 'The safety of the public and the workers transporting the cargo is our top priority. We ask that onlookers stay out of the path of transport trucks and workers, and do not enter sidewalks along the roads. If instructed to do so, please leave the road immediately.'
