Super-spicy food is popular among some enthusiasts as being 'highly addictive ,' but in the past, there was a tragic accident in which a boy died a few hours after eating super-spicy chips. On June 11, 2024, the Danish government announced that it would recall super-spicy instant noodles manufactured by the Korean food manufacturer Samyang Foods, citing 'the risk of acute poisoning due to the spiciness,' and would also ban future sales.

Denmark recalls Korean ramen over possible risks for 'acute poisoning' | AP News

The Danish food authority, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, has recalled three products from Samyang Foods' Buldak Stir-fried Noodles series. The two varieties, excluding the spiciest '3x Super Spicy,' are sold in Japan as ' Buldak Stir-fried Soup Noodles ' and ' Buldak Stir-fried Noodles 2x Super Spicy Hekbuldak .'

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration determined that the total amount of capsaicin contained in these products was excessively high, posing a risk of acute poisoning to consumers, and designated them as subject to a recall. Based on this, the authorities have instructed Danish retailers to recall the affected products, and are urging consumers to return or discard them.

The problem with super spicy instant noodles in South Korea started when confused consumers inquired about whether the noodles were legal. A local food research institute, which conducted tests at the request of the authorities, concluded that Buldak stir-fried noodles were harmful to health.

The super spicy ramen challenge is popular among Danish children, and in videos on TikTok and Instagram titled 'Can you eat spicy ramen?' children and young people are flocking to try the super spicy soup.

Authorities have not said whether anyone has suffered health problems from Buldak stir-fried noodles, but Henrik Damand Nielsen, head of food at the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, said the amount of chili pepper found in the noodles was higher than that found in the spicy chips that poisoned a child in Germany and left him hospitalized.

'Eating large amounts of chillies can be dangerous, especially for children and frail adults, and can cause symptoms including burning sensation, discomfort, nausea, vomiting and high blood pressure, which is why we are now asking stores to remove this product from their shelves,' Nielsen said.

Meanwhile, Samyang Foods said in a media statement, 'We understand that the measures in Denmark were not due to a problem with the quality of the product, but rather because the authorities believed that the product was 'too spicy and could cause problems.' We will closely investigate local regulations as we respond to this recall.'

The company said Buldak stir-fried noodles are exported all over the world, but this is the first time it has been ordered to be recalled.
