Each device allows users to scan their existing driver's license or ID and use it as a mobile driver's license or ID. It can also be used as a valid form of identification at more than 30 participating airports in the U.S., including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports.

The state is the 12th to implement mobile license initiatives, joining Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri and Utah.

'I'm pleased that New Yorkers will now have access to cutting-edge technology that provides convenience and security to those who use and accept mobile ID,' Governor Hawke said in making the announcement. 'Not only will the app give New Yorkers a quick way to view their identity, it will also give them control over the personal information they share.'

However, according to news site The Verge, there are privacy concerns over the fact that data is stored by contracted third-party vendors, and there are calls for strong encryption and safeguards that allow strict control over what data is shared and where.

The New York Civil Liberties Union, which works to protect privacy, said: 'Any program should be subject to public debate over its necessity and should have comprehensive technical and legal safeguards, including privacy protections. The digitalization of any identification system requires especially careful scrutiny and extreme caution.'
