Sony's data reveals that the PS5 generation will achieve the largest profit in PlayStation history in four years, and the total gameplay time for the PS5 will exceed that of the PS4
Sony held a business briefing on Thursday, May 30, 2024. At the briefing, materials related to Sony's game business were also distributed, revealing the number of PlayStation 5 (PS5) units sold and the difference in market share with PlayStation 4 (PS4).

The following chart shows PlayStation's sales (top) and profits (bottom) for each generation. The PS5 generation (2020-2023) recorded sales of $106 billion (approximately 16.79 trillion yen) and profits of $10 billion (approximately 1.57 trillion yen), the highest profits in a shorter period of time than other generations. However, this chart divides each year into generations by flagship game console, and 'PS5 generation sales and profits' also includes data from previous generation consoles such as the PS4.
The cumulative sales volume of PS5 is as follows. In 2023, the cumulative sales volume reached 56 million units.
The number of game consoles activated in a month in April 2024 was 49 million for both PS5 and PS4. In addition, the total game play time in April 2024 was 2.4 billion hours for PS5, exceeding the 1.4 billion hours for PS4.
Looking at sales by category, PS5's 'game sales' are down 12% compared to PS4, but 'add-on content sales' are up 176%.
Sony split PlayStation Plus into three plans : 'PlayStation Plus Essential,' 'PlayStation Plus Extra,' and 'PlayStation Plus Premium' in 2022. In 2023, the proportion of subscribers to higher-priced plans such as 'PlayStation Plus Extra' and 'PlayStation Plus Premium' increased compared to 2022, and the combined subscription rate for both plans reached 35% of all PlayStation Plus subscribers.
Sony has positioned the period from 2021 to 2023 as the 'period for establishing its position in the PS5 generation,' and from 2024 to 2026 it aims to improve profits while maintaining sustainability.
In addition, the company plans to increase profits in its game software development business by 'releasing new powerful titles' between 2024 and 2026.
