Spotify's in-car device 'Car Thing' is attached to the dashboard of a car and allows you to control Spotify via a smartphone connected to the car speaker via Bluetooth or wired. Sales began on an invitation- only basis in April 2021, and were officially released in February 2022.
However, due to issues such as product demand and supply chain issues, Spotify will stop production of Car Thing (PDF file) in July 2022. A Spotify spokesperson said, 'Existing devices will continue to work.'
In May 2024, Spotify sent an email to users who purchased Car Thing stating that 'Car Thing will be discontinued and will no longer be operational after December 9, 2024.' Spotify also has no plans to offer refund options for Car Thing or open source the code, and advises users to 'reset to factory settings and safely dispose of the device in accordance with local e-waste guidelines.'
Spotify said the decision to discontinue Car Thing is 'part of our ongoing efforts to streamline our product offering.' 'We understand this is disappointing, but this decision allows us to focus on developing new features and enhancements that provide a better experience for all Spotify users.'
Spotify also stated that it 'does not currently have plans to release a replacement or new version of Car Thing.'
