Project Starline, announced by Google in 2021, aims to use technology to represent the other party as a realistic 3D hologram, allowing people in remote locations to communicate as if they were actually there. Google describes the tool developed by Project Starline as a 'magic mirror,' and it is said that it is possible to enjoy natural conversations with the other party through this 'mirror.'

Project Starline initially required multiple cameras to capture the target person from all angles, and the installation took up the space of a room. Google reflected on this by saying, 'Previous Project Starline prototypes required complex hardware, such as infrared emitters and special cameras, to generate a live 3D model of the person you were talking to. This made the product, despite being great, too big to be deployed in an office.'

However, the prototype that Google released in 2023 uses AI and machine learning technology to generate 3D models of subjects with just a few cameras. 'Previous Project Starline models were about the size of a restaurant table, but the new prototype has been miniaturized to the size of a flat-screen TV,' Google said.

Project Starline has long been tested by companies such as Salesforce, T-Mobile, and WeWork, but on May 13, 2024, Google announced that it would 'partner with HP to begin commercializing this unique experience in 2025.' It also revealed that it is working on integrating Project Starline with common video conferencing services such as Zoom and Google Meet.

'The commercialization of Project Starline marks an important step toward creating a world where people can connect and collaborate with others wherever they are,' said Andrew Nartker, general manager of Project Starline.

Google has not disclosed any details about Project Starline, such as the cost of deploying it. Google said, 'We will provide more details in the second half of 2024.'
