The lawsuit was filed in January 2018, alleging that Microsoft infringed on patents held by IPA Technologies with its voice recognition assistant Cortana. IPA Technologies initially claimed six patents were infringed, but the lawsuit narrowed the issue to just one, Patent No. 7069560.

The patent was originally acquired in 1999 by SRI, a non-profit research institute. SRI actively encourages its employees to become independent, and in 2007, Siri, Inc., a company that deals with voice recognition technology, took the patent and became independent. The company's name is the same as Apple's voice recognition assistant, Siri, because Apple acquired Siri, Inc. in 2010 and introduced its technology.

The patent was subsequently sold to IPA Technologies in 2016 and expired in 2019.

A federal jury found that Microsoft infringed the patents and awarded IPA Technologies $242 million.

A Microsoft spokesperson said, 'Microsoft has never infringed IPA Technologies' patents and is confident that we will appeal.'

Microsoft sued to invalidate Patent No. 7,069,560, but a federal jury dismissed the lawsuit.

IPA Technologies has also sued Amazon and Google over infringement of the patent. Amazon won the lawsuit in 2021, but the lawsuit with Google is still ongoing.

By the way, Microsoft will end support for Cortana in 2023 in line with the promotion of its AI assistant function 'Copilot.'
