A thorough look at the appearance of the 'Xiaomi 14 Ultra,' which challenges the limits of smartphone cameras with a Leica-branded quad camera and dedicated grip

Xiaomi's ' Xiaomi 14 Ultra ' is a smartphone that features a Leica brand camera equipped with a large sensor. The GIGAZINE editorial department received the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the 'Xiaomi 14 Ultra Photography Kit' which is packed with a dedicated cover and camera grip, so we first took a closer look at the appearance.

The packaging for the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Xiaomi 14 Ultra Photography Kit looks like this.

Inside the Xiaomi 14 Ultra box were the Xiaomi 14 Ultra itself, a power adapter, a USB cable, and a small black box.

The power adapter has an output of 90W, which is high for a power adapter that comes with a smartphone. Note that since this is a sample product, the shape of the connector is different from that in Japan, but the retail version will come with a power adapter that can be inserted into a Japanese outlet.

Inside the small black box were a transparent cover, a quick start guide/warranty card, and safety instructions.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra looks like this. It has a 3200 x 1440 pixel OLED display.

The display has curved edges.

In addition, there is a punch-hole front camera at the top, which has a resolution of 32MP.

The camera is mounted in the black circular area on the back.

The back is covered with 'Nanotech vegan leather' developed by Xiaomi, which makes it less slippery.

The camera is equipped with four types of cameras: an ultra-wide-angle camera, a main camera, a telephoto camera, and a periscope-type super telephoto camera. All cameras are Leica branded, and the four cameras together form a camera system called 'LEICA VARIO-SUMMILUX 1:1.63-2.5/12-120 ASPH'.

The detailed specifications of the four cameras are as follows: The main camera is equipped with a 1-inch sensor, which is large for a smartphone camera.

role Number of pixels Focal length (35mm equivalent) Aperture Image stabilisation sensor
Ultra Wide Angle 50MP 12mm f/1.8 can be 1 inch
Main 50MP 23mm f/1.63-f/4.0 can be IMX858
Telephoto 50MP 75mm f/1.8 can be IMX858
Super Telephoto 50MP 120mm f/2.5 none IMX858

The circular camera part protrudes about 6mm compared to other parts.

If you place it face down on a desk, the edge of the camera will touch the desk.

There are no buttons on the left side.

The right side has a volume control button and a power button.

There is a speaker on the top.

On the bottom, from the left, there are a speaker, a USB-C port, and a SIM card slot.

The actual weight of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is 220g.

This is what it looks like with the included transparent case attached. The case is thin and colorless, so it doesn't stand out much.

The back looks like this.

The camera part protrudes outwards from the case.

Because the case protrudes further than the camera, the camera will not come into contact with the desk even when placed backside down, preventing scratches.

Even if you place the display side down, it prevents the display from coming into contact with the desk.

Next, we will check the contents of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra Photography Kit, which contains camera-related goods.

When I opened the box, camera-related goods appeared.

The contents of the box (from top left) are a special case, camera grip, decorative ring, adapter ring for attaching 67mm filters, strap, instruction manual for the camera grip, instruction manuals for the various rings, and warranty card.

When you put a special case on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, it looks like this. It gives it a more camera-like feel.

The camera grip looks like this:

The camera grip features a customizable dial, shutter button, customizable lever, and record button.

The bottom of the camera grip has a hole for a strap and a USB-C port.

There is a USB-C terminal on the inside, which can be inserted and connected to the USB-C port of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. The camera grip is equipped with a 1500mAh battery, and the Xiaomi 14 Ultra can be quickly charged from the camera grip.

When the camera grip is set on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, it looks like this.

The actual weight of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra when equipped with the dedicated cover and camera grip is 315g.

The camera grip allows you to hold it steadily with one hand, and from the back, it looks like it's not a smartphone at all.

The ring attached to the dedicated cover can be removed by pressing the button around the ring and turning it.

Just remove the ring.

The ring can be replaced with the included decorative ring or an adapter ring for mounting 67mm filters.

This is what it looks like when you put on the decorative ring.

By attaching the 67mm filter adapter ring, you can attach parts such as lens protection filters that are commercially available for interchangeable lenses.
