On April 8, 2024, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the United States and held a Japan-U.S. summit meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, where they discussed strengthening cooperation between Japan and the U.S. in various fields. During the meeting, a joint industry-academia AI research partnership was announced in which Japanese companies and major IT companies such as NVIDIA, Arm, Amazon, and Microsoft will provide $110 million (approximately 17 billion yen) in funding.

Building on groundbreaking university-company strategic partnerships in quantum computing and semiconductor engineering launched at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, the U.S. and Japanese governments have announced a new joint AI research partnership, with major tech companies including NVIDIA, Arm, Amazon, and Microsoft, as well as a consortium of Japanese companies committing $110 million in funding.

This partnership will see the University of Washington and University of Tsukuba , Carnegie Mellon University and Keio University join forces to strengthen U.S.-Japan global leadership in AI research and development and cutting-edge technology. Other collaborations include Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and NVIDIA on AI and quantum computing technologies, and will explore potential collaborations in the areas of computing and development.



Additionally, a new project agreement on high performance computing and AI was signed between the US Department of Energy and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology , and a new Memorandum of Understanding on AI for Science will be signed between Argonne National Laboratory and RIKEN.

In addition, NVIDIA will provide GPUs to Japanese IT companies such as Sakura Internet and SoftBank , and Google and Microsoft will provide computing resources to Japanese companies developing AI infrastructure models, further promoting cooperation between Japanese and American companies in the development of infrastructure models for generative AI.

In December 2023, before the partnership was announced, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang met with Prime Minister Kishida and said, 'We will do our best to prioritize the supply of NVIDIA GPUs to Japan.'

Prior to the announcement of the joint Japan-U.S. AI research partnership, Microsoft announced that it would invest 440 billion yen in strengthening its AI and cloud infrastructure in Japan.
