AMD announces the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Versal Prime Series Gen 2 SoCs that deliver up to 10 times the AI processing performance of the previous model

On April 9, 2024, AMD announced that it will release the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Versal Prime Series Gen 2 as the second generation of its

Versal SoC for embedded devices in the second half of 2025.

The second generation of AMD Versal consists of the Versal AI Edge Gen 2 with an integrated AI inference engine and the Versal Prime Series Gen 2 for general embedded systems. The design of both SoCs is the same except for the presence or absence of an AI engine.

Versal AI Edge Gen 2 achieves end-to-end acceleration by integrating programmable logic, vector processors, and high-performance CPUs, and supports all three phases of AI processing in a single SoC: 'pre-processing' related to sensor processing and data conditioning, 'AI inference' that executes deep learning algorithms, and 'post-processing' related to decision-making and the resulting actions. This means that AI-related processing can be performed without the need for a CPU or external memory other than the Versal AI Edge Gen 2.

In addition, compared to the first-generation Versal AI Edge, the Versal AI Edge Gen 2 achieves approximately three times the number of calculations per second, and the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Versal Prime Series Gen 2 are equipped with eight Arm

Cortex-A78AE chips and ten Cortex-R52 chips, improving post-processing capabilities by up to 10 times compared to the previous model.

In addition, AMD claims that 'Compared to the previous model, the Versal AI Edge Gen 2 can deliver 3.2 gigapixels per second of image processing performance, which is approximately four times faster, and approximately twice the video processing performance.'

As a result, the introduction of Versal AI Edge Gen 2 is expected to result in smaller embedded systems, lower power consumption, and reduced latency. AMD also provides a library called '

Vitis AI ' that consolidates runtimes, drivers, firmware, and more for Versal AI Edge Gen 2, which can significantly shorten the design and development time of systems for embedded devices.

Automaker Subaru has already announced that it will adopt the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 in its future EyeSight- equipped vehicles to provide enhanced AI performance and safety to its next-generation advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).

AMD has announced that it will begin shipping chip samples in the first quarter of 2025, evaluation kits in mid-2025, and production chips in the second half of 2025, as part of its schedule for the launch of the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 and Versal Prime Series Gen 2.
