It is pointed out that there are many low-quality books generated by AI on Google Books

Google's book search service,

Google Books , is a service that displays books that match or are related to a keyword when you enter the keyword. It has been pointed out that low-quality books generated by AI are indexed in Google Books.

When 404 Media searched Google Books for the keywords 'As of my last knowledge update,' dozens of books containing the phrase were returned.

According to 404 Media, some of the books shown in the search results are human-authored books about ChatGPT, machine learning, AI and other related topics, but most of the books shown in the first few pages of search results are AI-generated text.

In addition, when I actually typed 'As of my last knowledge update' into Google Books, about 23,800 books were displayed. The phrase 'As of my last knowledge update' appears frequently in these books.

The book '

Maximize Your Twitter Presence: 101 Strategies for Marketing Success ', published in March 2024, describes how to get a verified mark on X (formerly Twitter) over several pages, but since Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in 2022, it has become relatively easy to get a verified mark. The book states that 'At the time of last update in September 2021, Twitter was in the process of evaluating and updating its verification standards and processes, so the procedures and requirements may have changed since then,' indicating that it was written based on information as of September 2021.

'There's no way Google doesn't know what books they're adding to their Google Books index,' said Gary Price, editor of the library journal infoDOKET . 'They appear to index every book that's ever been published, no matter what it is. I'd like to see Google do some kind of labeling for the books that their AI generates.'

Alex Hanna, research director at the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR), also points out that 'AI-generated content will be pulled into Google Books, and Google will use that content to train new AI models; it's like an Ouroboros. Google will say it has 'quality filters,' but the details of these will never be revealed.'

Google has not said whether it will implement a policy to exclude AI-generated books from Google Books. A Google Books spokesperson said, 'We are continually adapting our systems and policies to help users find useful and relevant books within the Google Books corpus.'
