More than 200 celebrities, including Billie Eilish and Stevie Wonder, sign a letter condemning 'predatory AI' that steals audio and replaces artists.

In recent years, advances in AI have led to the emergence of technology that can learn the singing voices of human artists to create new songs. On April 2, 2024, the artist rights group

Artist Rights Alliance (ARA) released a letter stating that 'the use of AI, which could infringe on the rights of human artists and devalue music, should be refrained from.' More than 200 well-known artists, including Billie Eilish and Stevie Wonder , have signed the letter.

As AI technology develops, there are increasing cases of AI models being trained using artists' music, or AI generating songs that sound like real artists. This raises concerns that these AI-generated songs could result in reduced royalties paid to artists.

In its open letter, the ARA pointed out, 'Used responsibly, AI undoubtedly has great potential to enhance human creativity and deliver new and exciting experiences to music fans around the world. However, some platforms and AI developers are using AI to stifle that creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians and rights holders.'

They added: 'We must protect professional artists from predatory uses of AI that could steal their voices and likeness, infringe on creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem. We call on all digital music platforms and music services to pledge not to develop or deploy AI music-generation technology, content, or tools that diminish or replace the artistry of songwriters and artists, or deny us fair compensation for our work.'

The letter was signed by more than 200 artists, including Billie Eilish, Stevie Wonder, Nicki Minaj , Katy Perry , Elvis Costello , and Sam Smith , who say that AI 'poses a real threat to their art.'

'Working artists are struggling to make a living amid a booming music streaming service, and now they have the added burden of battling a deluge of AI-generated noise,' said Jen Jacobsen, executive director of the ARA. 'The unethical use of generative AI to replace human artists devalues the entire music ecosystem for both artists and fans.'

However, Jacobsen said, 'We do not expect this letter to create law. We are calling on technology and digital partners to work with us to make this a responsible marketplace, maintain quality, and ensure that AI does not replace human artists.'
