I tried the free game 'Celeste 64', which is a 3D version of the 2D mountain climbing action 'Celeste', and it was so interesting that I finished it all.

The mountain climbing game '

Celeste ' is an action game where you control a character on a 2D screen and aim to clear the stage by jumping along walls. You'll have to repeat trial and error over and over again with the high difficulty setting that assumes you'll make a mistake, but the feeling of joy when you overcome that and clear the stage is priceless. ' Celeste 64 ', a 3D remake of this work by the developer to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the game's birth, which has a profound story that delves into the inner world of the main character, is also worth seeing, and is available for free, so if you have already completed Celeste. An editorial staff member tried playing it.

Celeste 64 can be downloaded from the official website below.

This time I will be playing on a Windows PC, so I downloaded 'Celeste64-1.01-win-x64.zip'.

Unzip the downloaded folder and run 'Celeste64.exe' inside to start Celeste 64.

It is recommended to play Celeste 64 with a controller, so this time I used the PlayStarion 5 controller '

DualSense '. The button assignments are △ and ✕ to jump, ○ and □ to dash & interact, R1, R2, L1, and L2 to cling, the left stick to move the character, and the right stick to move the camera.

The stage of Celeste 64 looks like this. It's a miniature garden stage reminiscent of 'Super Mario 64,' with gimmicks set up here and there. The player controls 'Madeline', who also served as the main character in the original Celeste.

This is a strawberry. The main purpose of this game is to collect strawberries scattered on the stage.

The flags below are checkpoints. If you die, you will be revived here.

This is a cassette tape. If you touch it, you will be sent to a highly difficult action course with one strawberry.

The following is a grandmother who also appeared in Celeste. You can talk to it using the interact key.

The basic actions the player can perform are as follows.

Jump.

SKID jump that flies a little higher. Activate by moving the left stick 180 degrees in the opposite direction after walking and pressing the jump button immediately after.

This is dash. You can dash on the ground or in the air, but you can only dash in the air once. Madeline's hair turns light blue when she dashes, and returns to red when she lands again.

Then there's the dash jump, which allows you to fly far like a long jump. Activates by jumping immediately after dashing.

The most commonly used technique is ``clinging to a wall''. While clinging to a wall, you can move up, down, left, or right as long as the wall lasts. You can also jump a little higher by kicking the wall by jumping while clinging to it. The above is the basic operation.

Green crystals like the one below may be floating on the stage. If you touch this crystal, the number of dashes will be reset, and you will be able to dash again even if you have already dashed in the air.

The purple crystal is an item that increases the number of dashes, and if you touch it, you will be able to dash twice in the air.

When you touch the wings below, Madeline's body will float in the air and she will be able to fluff and move freely for a short period of time.

You can see how to collect strawberries by making full use of basic movements and items by watching the video below.

For example, the screen below. We know that there is a strawberry on top of the tower that Madeline is clinging to, but the thorns are blocking her and she can't go any further up.

So I jumped towards the sign nearby.

Now you can follow the signboard to the top.

On the rooftop was Theo, familiar from Celeste.

There are scaffoldings that will fall if you stand on them for a long time, and scaffoldings that you can't get to unless you make full use of your dash. Furthermore, there are various gimmicks such as scaffolding surrounded by thorns, and you will aim for strawberries while thinking about how to operate the character in 3D space and when to obtain items.

Camera operation is especially important in Celeste 64. For example, the following scene. Part of the scaffolding is hidden behind the pillars and is no longer visible.

Then move the camera to rotate it 90 degrees. This will allow you to see the footholds and make it easier to cross.

The game is cleared when you reach the 'highest point of the stage' like that. The time taken and the number of strawberries collected will be displayed.

The time it took to collect all the strawberries was 2 hours and 30 minutes on the first play, and 59 minutes and 43 seconds on the second play when I understood how to place and collect strawberries.

If you collect 30 strawberries, a strawberry mark will appear on the title screen. Unlike the original Celeste, where you only had to think about moving from side to side, with Celeste 64 you always have to think about which direction you are going to go in 360 degrees around you. This makes the controls a little more difficult and mistakes are more likely to occur, but the ``joy when you clear the game'' that you felt in Celeste is still there. Those who have played Celeste will probably be a little taken aback by the difference in the controls, but it's still a game you'll definitely want to play.

The Celeste 64 soundtrack is also available for free. I felt that Celeste 64's music was similar to the ocean stage music of 'Super Mario 64', and that's no wonder, as the author says that he was inspired by the soundtracks of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. It seems that he composed it.
