iOS 17.3 is out, adding Stolen Device Protection for your iPhone - The Verge

Stolen Device Protection is a feature that protects access to sensitive information such as saved passwords and credit cards. When enabled, this feature will require biometric authentication using Face ID or Touch ID when you attempt to access sensitive information outside of familiar locations such as home or work.

The information to be protected is as follows.
・Use a password or passkey stored in your keychain
・Use a payment method saved in Safari (automatic input)
・Cancel lost mode
・Erase all content and settings
・Apply for a new Apple Card
・Display Apple Card virtual card number
-Perform specific Apple Cash and Savings actions in your wallet (e.g. send money with Apple Cash or Savings)
・Set up a new device using your iPhone (e.g. Quick Start)

This is said to prevent fatal information leaks even if the device is stolen by someone who can unlock the lock screen.

In addition, Stolen Device Protection imposes a delay on some actions, such as changing your Apple ID password, so if the first action doesn't succeed, you have to wait another hour and try again before the action takes place. Thorough protection is in place. Even if the device is stolen, this delay allows the owner to mark the device as 'lost' and prevent access to the information.

The specific actions are as follows.
・Change your Apple ID password
・Sign out of your Apple ID
- Update your Apple ID account security settings (trusted devices, recovery keys, recovery contacts, etc.)
・Add or remove Face ID or Touch ID
・Change iPhone passcode
・Reset all settings
・Turn off 'Search'
・Turn off 'Stolen device protection'

iOS 17.3 introduces 'Stolen Device Protection,' as well as a 'Collaboration Playlist' feature that lets friends join and contribute to playlists in the Apple Music app, and streams content to select hotel TVs. features, new wallpapers in honor of Black History Month , and crash detection optimizations.

Note that ``Stolen device protection'' and ``Optimized collision detection'' are not added to iPadOS 17.3, but other than that, the same content as iOS 17.3 has been added in the update.
