'GIGAZINE Manga Award' recruitment starts in January 2024 & steps to create multilingual manga translation data are like this

It has been

announced that three series will be serialized in 2024. We would like to make this series even more exciting, so please apply for the GIGAZINE Manga Award for works that will be serialized together in 2024, and please support our manga works. In addition to serializing manga, we are also putting effort into creating translation data. Translated data is created using a slightly special procedure after trial and error, so we have explained the latest format in ' Procedure for creating translated data in Photoshop '. Please check them out as well. Also, please check out GIGAZINE Secret Club (GSC) where you can get information on new series and manga updates in advance.

◆Procedure for creating translation data in Photoshop
Traditionally, manga translations have taken a simple form of translating the manga text and phototypesetting the translated text. However, to give us more flexibility and speed, we are experimenting with Adobe Photoshop's data-driven graphics feature. We will explain the steps and benefits of data-driven graphics based on actual manuscripts.

First, create the translated text in a Google spreadsheet. At this time, enter 'Image variable 1' in column A of the first row and 'Text variable 1' in column B.

In the first line, enter the language type, such as 'Japanese' or 'English,' and enter the text to be translated next to it.

Once you have entered the text for one page, increase the cell called 'Text Variable 1' to 'Text Variable 6' since there are 6 texts on this page and the translation text is ready.

Select 'Download' from 'File' in the menu and click 'Comma delimited format (.csv)'. Download the created translated text in CSV format.

Next, we will prepare the manuscript to be translated using Adobe Photoshop. For the manuscript data, a text layer was created for each balloon in the order of the Japanese text written in the spreadsheet.

Japanese is written vertically, but the translated text is written horizontally, so click 'Direction' from 'Format' and select 'Horizontal writing'.

Press the + button from the layer panel to create a layer called 'Language' below the text layer, and the manuscript data preparation is complete.

Select 'Variable' from 'Image' and click 'Define'.

A variable window will open, so select the first text layer from 'Layers' and check 'Replace Text'. Then, a variable called 'Text Variable 1' was assigned to the layer.

Repeat by pressing the arrow button and checking 'Replace Text'.

After defining variables for the text, assign variables to the 'Language' layer as well. Since the 'Language' layer is not text, we checked 'Replace image' and defined it as 'Image variable 1'.

Change to 'Dataset' from the pull-down menu in the upper left, and click 'Load' to load the CSV file you downloaded earlier. At this time, be careful as even the slightest mistake in the notation in the spreadsheet or the definition in Photoshop will result in a loading error.

Check that the text in the spreadsheet matches the text defined in the manuscript data.

If you press the arrow button, the 'Dataset' will change to 'English' and the 'Value' will also change to English text.

After changing the dataset to English, click 'Apply' and 'OK'.

Then, the text of the manuscript data switched to English. Once you have adjusted the position of the text to match the balloon, you are done.

The reason for creating translation data using data-driven graphics is that although it takes some time to prepare, the detailed work of ``rewriting text'' can be simplified to the simple operation of ``switching data sets.'' is 1 point. This step will be very useful if you want to expand to other languages other than just English. For example, in the image below, I created rows for 'French' and 'Chinese' in addition to Japanese and English in the spreadsheet.

Then, you can easily switch between multiple languages from the 'dataset' by simply loading the CSV file using the same procedure. We will continue to focus on translating existing works and translating new series, so please support us.
