JEDEC announces next-generation memory module standard “CAMM2” for notebook PCs

JEDEC , an organization that formulates semiconductor device standards in the United States, has announced that it will standardize Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM2), a new standard for memory modules for notebook computers.

CAMM standard published, opening door for thin, speedy RAM to overtake SO-DIMM | Ars Technica

CAMM2 is a memory module independently developed by Dell to be installed in the Precision 7670 mobile workstation in April 2022. The advantage of CAMM is its thinness, which is 57% thinner than the SO-DIMM that has been used so far. Also, according to Dell, the supported clock speed of CAMM2 exceeds the upper limit of 6400MHz for DDR5 SO-DIMM, and says, ``It can support higher clock speeds than ever before.''

CAMM2 includes two variations: DDR5 CAMM2 for high-performance notebook or desktop PCs and LPDDR5(X) CAMM2 for notebook and server products. DDR5 CAMM2 and LPDDR5(X) CAMM2 each have the same connector but different pinouts, so you cannot accidentally install a DDR5 CAMM2 into an LPDDR5/5X connector. Another point is that CAMM2 can use 'unsoldered LPDD5X memory'.

Additionally, CAMM2 does not require multiple memory modules to enable dual-channel memory, so one CAMM2 module can have two memory channels, giving more memory bandwidth to the CPU and integrated graphics. It is said that it will give higher performance.

Until now, the CAMM2 module was Dell's original technology, so it was only manufactured by Dell. With JEDEC announcing it as a standard, we can expect other manufacturers to bring CAMM2 modules to market. In fact, Samsung has announced plans to commercialize LPDDR5 CAMM2 in 2024.
