An incident occurred in which a participant in the environmental protection movement who was blocking a road was shot to death by a driver angry at the traffic jam.

In Panama, South America,

large-scale demonstrations are taking place over copper mining in a biodiversity area. In November 2023, when some environmental protection movement participants formed a barricade on the road and were holding a protest, two participants were shot and killed by a driver who was furious at the road blockade. It happened on the 7th of May.

The incident, which occurred on November 7, 2023, on a highway in the Chame neighborhood west of Panama City, was filed by Kenneth Darlington, a lawyer and university professor.

Darlington initially tried to persuade the demonstrators who were blocking the road, but an altercation with the demonstrators developed, and Darlington pulled a handgun from his pocket and demanded that the demonstration be scaled back. However, the demonstrators did not heed Darlington's demands. When one of the protesters approached Darlington, Darlington opened fire on him from just a few meters away.

Amid fear and unrest at the scene, Darlington dismantled stone and tire barricades that demonstrators had erected. During the incident, another protester confronted Darlington, but Darlington fired again at the suspect. The participant who was shot fell to the side of the road, clutching his chest.

Darlington was then arrested red-handed by police who rushed to the scene. The two protesters shot by Darlington were also confirmed dead the same day.

In the Chame area, which is home to a richly biodiverse jungle, local authorities have awarded Canada-based mining company First Quantum Minerals a major contract that will allow it to mine the area's largest copper mine for more than 20 years. I was trying to conclude. Some environmental activists have been protesting the deal, blocking highways for three weeks in the run-up to Darlington's shooting. According to the New York Post, an overseas media outlet, the road closures not only affect the transportation of food, fuel, and medicine, but also cause businesses to lose up to $80 million (approximately 12 billion yen) each day. Nearby schools have reportedly been closed for more than a week.

Panama's President Laurentino Cortizo has expressed his condolences to the families of the two participants who died.
