Web Summit is the world's largest international technology conference, held every year in Lisbon, and is scheduled to be held from November 13th to 16th in 2023. However, in response to CEO Paddy Cosgrave's comments on X (formerly Twitter), Israel and several engineers announced a boycott.
The following is a chronological summary of CEO Cosgrave's statements and the process leading up to the boycott. First, on October 8, 2023, immediately after the Islamic organization Hamas attacked Israel, CEO Cosgrave posted on X an image comparing the number of deaths between Palestinians and Israelis from 2008 to 2023. The death toll for Palestinians was overwhelmingly high.

And on October 13, 2023, he wrote, 'I am shocked by the words and actions of Western countries. War crimes should be considered war crimes even if committed by allies, and their actions are condemned. '', arguing that Israel's treatment of Palestine amounts to a war crime.
I'm shocked at the rhetoric and actions of so many Western leaders & governments, with the exception in particular of Ireland's government, who for once are doing the right thing. War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are.

Many people reacted to Cosgrave's remarks, and many people criticized him. For example, David Marcus , a former PayPal executive and leader of the Meta cryptocurrency project, said, ``I'm disappointed in your lack of awareness. There are other ways to call for restraint from brutality.'' You chose to support terrorists. I will never again attend, support, or speak at any event hosted by you, including Web Summit.' We have announced that we will boycott all events.
Saddened by your ill-informed stance. You could've taken a more nuanced one, condemning these atrocities and calling for restraint. That would've been acceptable. You chose to support terrorists. As such I'll never attend/sponsor/speak at any of your events again.

In addition, Josh Kopelman , founder of venture capital firm First Round Capital, said, ``Given the posts Cosgrave has liked on X in the last few days, it is difficult to take Cosgrave's statements at face value. 'It's difficult,' Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan also announced a boycott of Web Summit.
I refuse to appear at Web Summit and am canceling my appearance.

CEO Cosgrave later wrote on October 16, 2023: 'We are devastated to witness the horrific killings and high levels of civilian casualties in Israel and the Gaza Strip. We condemn the attack by Hamas, We express our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones. We hope for a peaceful reconciliation,' he said, condemning Hamas.
We are devastated to see the terrible killings and the level of innocent civilian casualties in Israel and Gaza. We condemn the attacks by Hamas and extend our deepest sympathies to everyone who has lost loved ones. We hope for peaceful reconciliation.

However, 40 minutes after CEO Cosgrave's post condemning Hamas , Dole Shapira , Israel's ambassador to Portugal, told Mr. Cosgrave is unable to put aside his extreme political views and condemn Hamas's terrorist activities even in these difficult times.'' Posted and announced that Israel will boycott Web Summit. Furthermore, Ambassador Shapira called for a boycott of Web Summit, saying, ``Dozens of companies have already canceled their participation in Web Summit. We encourage them to cancel their participation in Web Summit.'' I am.
Today, I wrote to the Mayor of Lisbon informing him that #Israel will not participate in the @WebSummit conference due to the outrageous statements made by the conference CEO, Paddy Cosgrave.

Even during these difficult times, he is unable to set aside his extreme political…
In addition, CEO Cosgrave stated on X after Ambassador Shapira announced the boycott, ``Again, war crimes should be considered war crimes even when committed by an ally, and their actions should be condemned.'' , shows an attitude of firmly adhering to one's own claims.
To repeat: War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies & should be called out for what they are.

I will not relent.
