On January 9, 2024, X suddenly banned the accounts of famous journalists, writers, podcasters, etc. Banned accounts include those of The Intercept 's Ken Klippenstein , author and podcaster Rob Rousseau, The Texas Observer journalist Stephen Monacelli, and left-leaning political accounts. It included accounts for related podcasts, TrueAnon , and @zei_squirrel , which posts manga with left-wing content. What all the banned accounts have in common is that they have previously criticized the Israeli government.
George Galloway, a former UK member of parliament, tweeted: 'Dear Elon Musk, banning @AlanRMacLeod 's account is unfair. He is one of the most popular forensic journalists in the world and an honorable man to work on your platform. 'This is one of those people. Please reinstate his account,' he posted to Mr. Musk. In response, Mr. Mask replied , ``I'll look into it (sweat).''
Mr @elonmusk the suspension of @AlanRMacLeod is unconscionable. He is one of the world's most popular and forensic journalists and is a credit to your platform
— George Galloway (@georgegalloway) January 9, 2024
Please reinstate him.
Afterwards, Mr. Musk posted, ``We are thoroughly investigating spam and fraudulent accounts, and in some cases genuine accounts may be banned.'' I explained that it may have gone wrong.
We do sweeps for spam/scam accounts and sometimes real accounts get caught up in them

On the other hand, Jackson Hinkle, a political commentator and influencer with over 2.3 million followers, responded more directly to Musk, saying, ``Why are accounts critical of Israel being banned?'' I'm asking questions. In response, Musk responded , ``I'll look into it.'' But at the same time, 'It's okay to criticize anything, but calling for extreme violence is illegal. For the record, I personally don't agree with your opinion. Freedom of Speech The point of ``is to allow people whose views you disagree with to express their views.''

In addition, Mr. Hinkle posted, ``Why is Hamas 's X account banned even though Israeli terrorists are allowed to maintain it?'' and was suddenly banned this time. It was pointed out that the accounts included many Hamas-related accounts.

In response, Musk said, ``This was a difficult decision. Many government leaders, including the United States, are calling for murder, but we (X) have UN immunity rules. 'We will not suspend your government account if you do so. However, because Hamas is not recognized as a government by the United Nations, it was banned.'
This was a tough call.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 9, 2024
While many government leaders, including in the USA, do call for killing people, we have a “UN exemption rule”; if a government is recognized by the UN, we will not suspend their accounts.
Hamas is not recognized as a government by the UN, so was…
Hinkle then said, ``I understand the rules, but I don't understand why they only apply to Palestinian accounts.'' How many cases have Israeli accounts been violated that violate the same rules but have not been held accountable?'' Here are some examples of Israeli X accounts that violate X's rules but are not subject to bans.
I understand the rule, but I don't understand why it's only being applied to PALESTINIAN accounts. Here are a few examples of pro-Israeli accounts that have not been held accountable for violating the same rule. pic.twitter.com/lA7WWivYTP

In response to the post, Musk said, ``In general, bans should be done evenly. We are very reluctant to permanently ban accounts, so instead of getting an immediate permanent ban, we Please consider that the ban will continue several times and become longer.'
In general, suspensions should be even-handed.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 9, 2024
We are also very reluctant to have permanent suspensions, so people should expect a series of temporary suspensions that become longer, rather than instant permanent suspensions.
Hinkle said he understood X's rules, but noted that the Palestinian X account was not posting to massacre Israelis. On the other hand, some of the Israeli X accounts that have been left unbanned are making statements that call for genocide of Palestinians. That's not the case,' he points out.
Did they call for the extinction of Israel on X?
— Jackson Hinkle ???????? (@jacksonhinklle) January 9, 2024
People are upset because @qassam2024 was PERMANENTLY suspended, whereas pro-Israeli accounts with similar genocidal rhetoric only receive temporary suspensions — or no suspension at all. The rule isn't being upheld fairly. pic.twitter.com/0qW7lURwIm
Monacelli, one of the journalists whose accounts were banned, told the technology media Motherboard, ``I have not received any communication from Twitter regarding the reason for my account being banned,'' and ``I have not received any communication from Twitter regarding the reason for my account being banned.'' 'I can't think of anything that would get me banned. I've published multiple critical reports about Twitter and Elon Musk,' he said. 'The only message I received from Twitter was in response to my complaint. All I got were responses that were full of bugs.”
Below is a screenshot of the message Mr. Monacelli received from X.
In addition, Mr. Musk came under fire for his anti-Israel remarks on X in November 2023, which caused many large companies to stop advertising on X. It is estimated that X, which lost a major advertising client due to Mr. Musk's careless remarks, will lose a lot of advertising revenue .
Also, this is not the first time Musk has unilaterally banned a journalist's account. Shortly after acquiring Twitter in December 2022, Mr. Musk also banned a journalist's account.
