VBScript is a Windows scripting language based on Visual Basic and implemented as part of Active Scripting for running scripts on Windows. Originally a scripting language implemented in Internet Explorer, with the July 2019 update, Microsoft is disabling VBScript by default in Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10.

According to Microsoft, VBScript will be deprecated in Windows in the future, but rather than being abolished all at once, it will be phased out first by implementing it as an on-demand feature.

According to BleepingComputer, VBScript allows malicious attackers to distribute malware and botnets such as Lokibot ,Emotet , and Qbot to victim computers. In fact, Microsoft expanded support for the Anti-Malware Scanning Interface (ASMI) to Office 365 clients in 2018 to protect against attacks using VBA macros.

Microsoft is also disabling XLM macros in January 2022, blocking VBA macros in July 2022, and blocking untrusted XLL add-ins by default in May 2023.
