Apple will be required to open its ecosystem to rivals under EU digital market law

European Commissioner Thierry Breton has issued a green light against Apple under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which was created to prevent large companies from abusing their market power and encourage new entrants. It has been reported that he has asked for the system to be opened up to rivals.

Mr. Breton held a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in Brussels on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. In a subsequent interview with Reuters, he said, ``The next job for Apple and other big techs based on the DMA is to open the door to competitors.''

The DMA is a law created to target Big Tech in order to create a fair business environment for all market entrants. It was enacted in November 2022 and will come into force from May 2023. However, implementation is still in progress.

'Whether it's an e-wallet, a browser, or an app store, consumers using an iPhone should be able to benefit from competitive offerings from a variety of service providers,' Breton added.

Cook appears to have explained security and privacy issues to Breton about why Apple's ecosystem is closed, but Breton said, ``EU regulations allow innovation without compromising security and privacy.'' 'It's something that promotes it,' he told Reuters.
