In recent years, not only the Internet Archive, but also various organizations such as museums and research organizations have been working to digitize, preserve, and publish materials that are useful to society. However, display behavior often differs depending on the viewer adopted by each institution and the browser used by users, creating inconveniences for providers, developers, and users.

IIIF was established in 2011 by Stanford University and others to improve this problem. IIIF is a framework that allows users to view images, audio, and visual files in a consistent manner. By using a viewer app that supports IIIF, users can easily compare images provided by multiple institutions, zoom, You can rotate, annotate, and perform other actions consistently.

IIIF provides APIs for distributing and displaying content from a server to viewers, as well as APIs for searching content. You can enjoy benefits such as 'direct display.'

The Internet Archive has been using IIIF's services since 2015, experimenting with new services for partners and patrons that utilize images and text from Archive.org. This service was officially released on September 18, 2023.

One of the changes associated with the official release is that the access source for the IIIF API will change from 'iiif.archivelab.org' to 'iiif.archive.org'. Developers who were creating projects in the old domain will be transitioned in stages over the next few weeks, with ongoing updates to ensure developers have the information they need.

So far, the French National Library and Harvard University have adopted IIIF.
