A free real-time strategy game 'OpenHV' play review that allows you to enjoy the deep strategy of base defense with simple operation

Influenced by Westwood Studios' real-time strategy game '

Dune II ' that appeared in 1992 , development started in 1993, but development ended without being released. It has been revived in modern times as OpenHV . The open source game engine ' OpenRA ' that makes Westwood Studios games operable is used, and anyone can play for free, so I actually played it.

There are multiple ways to download OpenHV, and this time I downloaded it via ' itch.io ', which sells and publishes indie games.

You can check the video that shows the state of the game at a glance from the following.

The title screen of OpenHV looks something like this.

OpenHV supports 'Singleplayer' and online 'Multiplayer'. This time we will play in 'Singleplayer' mode.

There are two ways to play in 'Singleplayer' mode: 'Skirmish' and 'Mission'. This time I chose Squamish.

On the next screen, you can edit the money you have at the start, the strength of the enemy, the time limit, etc. After adjusting, click 'Start Game' at the bottom right.

The game has started. At the center is the 'Main Base', and if it is destroyed by an enemy attack, the game will be over.

In order to expand your own base, you must install 'Power Plant' and 'Module' within the remaining money and power. The upper left number in the red frame is the money you have, the middle number is the elapsed time, and the right number is the power.

This is the module. Modules have effects such as 'create and repair basic mobile units'. The fund required for installation is $ 500, and once installed, a 9 second cooldown is required before reinstallation. Consumes 20 power each.

By installing modules, you will be able to create basic units called pods that search for and attack surrounding enemies.

These units basically auto-explore their surroundings and increase the map's field of view. It is also possible to guide the unit to the player's desired location by selecting the unit by clicking or dragging and then right-clicking the desired location. It is also possible for the player to set a movement route and have the player patrol that route.

It is also possible to create air force and naval units depending on the development of the base, such as adding power plants, mining from mines, and building more advanced unit creation tools. Air Force units can attack enemy forces and aircraft on the ground from the air.

Naval units can also attack enemies on water if the map has an ocean. It is important to strengthen your base by strengthening units and bases.

As you expand your base, you may be attacked by hostile forces.

You can also install walls to prevent intrusions and units that intercept, so you can repel the enemies together with the units you have made so far.

If the defense line is breached, the power plants and other facilities that have been built up until then will be attacked and destroyed by the enemy.

The last remaining home base was also easily destroyed.

If the base is destroyed, the game is over. The goal of OpenHV is 'How much can you defend your base while expanding your own base and invading the enemy?'

Despite its simple UI and controls, OpenHV is an addictive game with a very severe difficulty level that will make you want to try again and again. It's a game where you can enjoy creating a strong base while managing your limited money and electricity, so players who are confident in their skills should give it a try.
