Mary Quant was born on 11th February 1930 in Blackheath, London, to Welsh parents. Mr. Quant seems to have hoped to study fashion before entering university, but he studied illustration and art education at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where he went on with his parents' persuasion.
After graduating, Mr. Quant got a job at 'Braagaard', a luxury hat store in London's West End Mayfair. After that, in 1955, he independently opened a shop called 'Bazaar' around Stone Square in Chelsea, London. Initially, Bazaar sold clothing purchased from wholesalers, and it seems that Mr. Quant was not designing clothes with his own hands from around this time.
Mr. Quant deals with unique and boldly designed clothing at Bazaar, which will attract attention from fashion magazines such as ' Harper's Bazaar '. In response to this, Mr. Quant seems to have started designing clothes with his own hands.
In the 1960s, 'miniskirts' became popular, but Mr. Quant's name may be mentioned as one of the inventors of this. However, there are various theories about the inventor of the miniskirt, some claim that Mr. Quant was the inventor, and some claim that another fashion designer was the inventor. Still, there is no doubt that Mr. Quant is one of the people who have contributed to popularizing the miniskirt. Also, Mr. Quant seems to have made hot pants popular among young people besides miniskirts.
Quant paired miniskirts with innovative colorful tights and accessories. Below is a picture taken in London on August 1, 1967, with Mr. Quant and the model wearing MARY QUANT's miniskirt.
Mr. Quant's family announced that he 'passed away peacefully' at his home in Surrey on Thursday, April 13.
