Most of the content provided by various video services such as YouTube, Twitch, Netflix, and Disney+ is delivered in 1080p, but if the viewer uses a display with a resolution higher than 1080p, the browser will change the resolution of the display. The video must be scaled to fit. Most browsers use common upscaling techniques that end up with a blurry looking content.
With NVIDIA's newly released RTX VSR, AI can sharpen object edges and reduce video artifacts , allowing low-definition content to be upscaled to 4K to match the resolution of the display.
Below are screenshots of a YouTube video, on the left, viewed in 1080p, and on the right, the same video upscaled to 4K on an RTX VSR. You can see that it is clear overall from the foreground to the background.
If you zoom in, you can see that the jaggies of the building and wiring are weakening.
RTX VSR works with any web video, so you can even upscale low-res YouTube videos and streaming apps like Netflix, which have to pay extra for 4K content. Upscaling is available on Chrome and Edge at the time of article creation.
NVIDIA plans to support video from 360p to 1440p up to a frame rate of 144Hz and upscale to 4K resolution. This upscaling was previously only available on NVIDIA's Shield TV , but advances in the Chromium engine have made it possible for modern GPUs.
