Online games whose service ended in 2020 are completely free and revived & the source code is also released and freely modifiable

Online games that have ended their service are generally not playable again. However, on January 11, 2023, it was suddenly announced that the online game Duelyst , which ended its service in 2020, will be open sourced. At the time of article creation, free distribution of source code and desktop applications has begun, and anyone can play for free.

Duelyst is a strategy battle game with deck-building elements developed by Counterplay Games , the developers of the action game ' Godfall '. It was released to the public in 2016 as a free-to-play online game. You can understand what kind of game Duelyst is by playing the following trailer.

Duelyst was shut down in 2020 and was no longer playable. However, on January 11, 2023, open source was suddenly announced, and desktop clients and web clients were released for free. In addition, the source code is released under an extremely loose license of CC0 1.0 worldwide , and users can freely modify the source code.

The desktop client is distributed at the following link.

The client distribution page had clients for Windows, macOS, and Linux, so I downloaded the Windows version client. The file size is 607MB.

When I unzipped the downloaded ZIP file, the client executable file 'Duelyst.exe' was stored, so I double-clicked it.

When the client starts up, you will be prompted to log in, so enter your user name and password and click 'LOGIN'. At this time, it was unnecessary to create an account, and it was OK to enter any user name and password.

After logging in, I was able to play freely. Although it does not support Japanese at the time of article creation, it is possible to play sufficiently by referring to

unofficial Japanese Wiki .

In addition to the desktop version client, a web client is also available for free, and you can also play the game from a PC, tablet terminal, or smartphone browser by accessing `` https://staging.duelyst.org/ ''.

According to the published

roadmap , the open source version of Duelyst has removed the payment processing code and will be free to play forever. There are also plans to develop apps for Android and iOS and implement daily quests.

Also, as mentioned above, Duelyst's source code is released under a very loose license of CC0 1.0 worldwide, and you can modify and reuse the source code and in-game art without restrictions. When I actually downloaded the source file and checked the contents, it contained a lot of art that appeared in the game.
