Fridge Compressor Autopsy - It is crap - Terrible design decisions - 2009 Embraco locked-up... - YouTube
The compressor that Mr. David got was manufactured by Brazilian refrigeration equipment maker Embraco in 2009, and it is said that it has repeatedly stopped operating due to failure.
It powers up but doesn't work properly.
David took out the oil first to disassemble and check the inside. The oil has some shavings in it and is cloudy.
In order to find out why it is so dirty, David opens the compressor and looks inside. In the middle was the main rotating mechanism, which I could easily turn with my finger.
However, even if I add oil and connect the power, it won't turn.
David took it even further. It is a general mechanism in which a coil is stretched around the motor, but when you turn it with your finger, you feel that the shaft rubs against the outer wall.
Taking out the motor looks like this. It is said that there are traces of wear on the outside.
Due to energy efficiency issues, the space between the outer wall of the motor and the inner side of the coil is very narrow, and the oil is designed to flow through the narrow gap. David concluded, however, that this efficiency-focused design created wear and oil contamination, resulting in failure.
David argues that either the viscosity of the oil should have been changed or the surface area of the motor should have been changed to prevent failure.
'Refrigerator compressors in the 1940s and 1950s were highly efficient and consistently long-lived, so pushing the limits of design like this is not the only way to ensure efficiency.' He said that the customer's repair costs and the environment were not taken into consideration, and the quality of the product was declining.
