Esra Tasari and colleagues at the University of Chicago Sleep Research Center have gathered 80 subjects to begin a study of obesity and sleep. Subjects were 21-40 years old and all were considered 'overweight' with a BMI of 25-29.9. In addition, subjects had an average sleep time of less than 6.5 hours for at least the last 6 months, which was below the '7 hours' standard recommended for American adults.
Tasari et al. First investigated the health of the subjects for two weeks. We asked the subjects to wear wearable devices and live their lives as usual. Two weeks later, the subjects were divided into two groups, one group doing nothing and the other group individually counseling on sleep improvement.
After that, when the calorie intake and the increase / decrease in body weight were investigated by observing for another two weeks, the average sleep time of the counseling group increased by 72 minutes per day. In addition, the group found that their daily energy intake decreased by an average of about 270 kcal and their body weight decreased by an average of about 0.48 kg.
Tasari and colleagues point out that the main reason for the improved sleep of subjects is 'to refrain from using electronic devices before going to bed.' 'Many people are busy finding ways to reduce calories and lose weight, but it may be a problem that can be solved simply by spending more time sleeping,' said Tasari and colleagues.
