When did Twitter finally resume the process of granting certification badges?

Twitter has suspended the application system for 'certified badges' since 2017, but found that it will finally resume the application process from 2021. It is also expected that the introduction of the new policy will remove authentication badges for accounts that do not meet the policy requirements.

Twitter launched a 'certified badge' in 2009 to prevent spoofing of companies and celebrities on SNS. At that time, it was a mechanism that Twitter issued a badge by calling out to the account, but in 2016 a system for requesting badge acquisition appeared.

However, the process of issuing badges by the request system is unclear, and criticism continues that the badges are not received despite the official account. As a result, the request system was suspended in 2017.

Then, in 2020, Twitter began preparing to restart the request system. In November, we began to solicit opinions on the draft policy for the reissue of certified badges.

And on December 17, 2020, Twitter announced that it will implement a new verification policy for certified badges from January 20, 2021. It is said that the application process will not be restarted as soon as the new policy becomes effective on January 20, but it will be possible to actually apply for a while, but Twitter says that it will be possible in 'early 2021'. Stated. Also, when the new policy becomes effective, the authenticated badge will be removed from accounts that do not meet the requirements of the new policy.

According to Twitter, the new policy defines a 'full account' as an account with all of the following:

・ Confirmed email address or phone number
·profile image
·Display name

In the future, there will be six types of accounts to be authenticated: 'government officials,' 'brands / non-profit organizations,' 'news,' 'entertainment,' 'sports,' and 'activists / other influential individuals.' In addition, at the stage of soliciting opinions, there was an opinion that scholars, scientists, religious leaders, etc. should be included in the certification target, so it is said that they are considering adding these dedicated categories. Until a specific category is added, this person will be subject to the certification process as an 'activist / other influential individual'. In fact, even at the time of writing the article, scientists and others are still subject to the certification process, which helps to identify reliable information in the epidemic of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Accounts that already have an authorization badge will not be removed, even after January 20th, as long as they meet the requirements of the new policy. In addition, accounts that may have their badges removed as the new policy becomes effective will be notified to that effect.

And in early 2021, you will be able to apply for an authentication badge from your account settings. Authentication is a two-tiered process, an automated review process and a human review process.

In addition, Twitter will introduce a way to label automated accounts and deceased accounts sometime in 2021. Instead of automatically removing the authorization badge for the deceased's inactive account, we plan to adopt a method of monumenting the account.
