Linux kernel phased out support for WiMAX
by
Linux kernel developer Arnd Bergmann has suggested that WiMAX support for the Linux kernel, which has been ongoing since 2009, will be phased out.

The Linux Kernel Looks To Eventually Drop Support For WiMAX --Phoronix
WiMAX is a standard established by the technical standardization organization, IEEE , in 2001, and has attracted attention as a means of providing the Internet to areas where it is difficult to lay fixed lines. There are communication services using WiMAX such as UQ WiMAX in Japan, but in recent years, the appearance of 5G communication has been deprived of the topic.
Bergmann reported on the Linux kernel mailing list that he will remove the WiMAX support infrastructure from the Linux kernel in the future. At the time of writing the article, the only WiMAX device for which the Linux kernel provides a driver is Intel 2400m, which still cannot use the WiMAX frequency band used at airports, etc., and only supports hardware prior to the Sandy Bridge generation. Is not ... NetworkManager, a network management daemon that runs on Linux, also ended WiMAX support in 2015, and the existence of WiMAX in Linux has been decreasing year by year.

The kernel patch submitted by Bergmann will first move the Intel 2400m driver from 'drivers / net / wimax' to 'drivers / staging / wimax'. If there are no WiMAX driver users, support will be discontinued as it is.
Since the Linux kernel code base is getting bigger year by year due to support for new devices, it may be necessary to discontinue support for old devices like Mr. Bergmann this time.
