Total smartphone sales in China in the second quarter of 2020 were down 17% year-on-year and up 9% quarter-on-quarter. Counterpoint believes that the Chinese smartphone market is showing signs of recovery from the shrinking COVID-19 epidemic, but has not yet returned to pre-ephemeral demand.

The graph below shows the share of smartphone sales in China. Huawei has the largest market share in the second quarter of 2020, increasing by 13 points from the same period last year (left) and 7 points from the first quarter of 2020 (center). Counterpoint also reports that one-third of smartphones sold in China in the second quarter of 2020 are 5G enabled.

Huawei exclusions are being shouted in the

United States and the United Kingdom , and due to the fact that Google's services can no longer be used, the number of Huawei smartphones sold has dropped by 20% worldwide. Therefore, the Chinese market is more important than ever for Huawei, and Huawei is investing heavily to expand the 5G network in China.

In addition, the largest year-on-year increase in smartphone sales in the Chinese market was Apple, which recorded approximately 32% growth. Counterpoint points out that the second-generation iPhone SE, which appeared in April 2020, isn't 5G capable, but is in the top three smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2020. On the other hand, sales volume of smartphone makers other than Apple and Huawei decreased significantly compared with the same period last year.

Counterpoint analyst Zhang Menmen said, 'China's economic activity has resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, but consumer confidence remains low. We are actively promoting 5G-compatible smartphones by reducing the prices of 5G-compatible smartphones and 5G plans, and as a result, 5G-compatible smartphones account for one-third of total smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2020. But it still couldn't offset the decline in the overall market.'
