According to the 2020 digital news report published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Instagram is becoming an important news source for people, especially young people aged 18-24. As a result, the amount of news shared on Instagram has more than doubled since 2018.

``Instagram has become very popular among young people, who responded very well to the stories told in visual images shared on Instagram,'' said Nick Newman, who led the survey, in an interview with BBC News . I'm going to do it,' he said, demonstrating that young people often respond to news shared on Instagram.

The graph below summarizes the survey results on 'Social media used to check the news in a week'. The survey target was 24,000 people in 12 countries: United Kingdom, United States, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Australia and Brazil. Instagram (purple) used only 2% to check the news as of 2014, but gradually increased the usage rate and reached 11% in 2020. On the other hand, Twitter is 12% in 2020, and the report says that “Instagram will exceed Twitter for 2021”. The most frequently used media for news checking is Facebook (36%), followed by YouTube (21%).

The report also reveals that nearly a quarter of 18-24 year olds in the United Kingdom use Instagram to communicate information about the new coronavirus. However, the survey also found that social media such as Instagram is the least trusted source of information. About 59% of all respondents answered that they 'trust' the information sent by the government or the media, but the percentage of respondents who 'trust' the news originated from social media Only 26%.

It should be noted that more than one-third of the respondents to the questionnaire are using Instagram, and it is also clear that more than two-thirds are Instagram users if they are under 25 years old.
