It is known that pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect early among many cancers, progresses rapidly, and has a very low 5-year survival rate . Researchers in Israel have found a way to kill such pancreatic cancer cells by injecting certain molecules into the body and reduce it by 80-90%.

Research teams led by Professor

Malca Cohen-Armon of Tel Aviv University and Dr. Talia Golan of the Sheba Medical Center have used 24 mice, whose immunity has been suppressed to prevent rejection of xenogeneic cells, using human pancreatic cancer cells. We conducted an experiment on a new method for self-destructing.

The research team divided 24 mice into 8 groups of 8 mice, and inserted human pancreatic cancer cells into each group as xenografts. It took about 15 days for the pancreatic cancer cells to grow in the mouse.

The team then infused the two groups with a molecule called “ PJ34 ” that was developed to treat patients with stroke. PJ34 has been reported to suppress microglia activation associated with cerebral ischemia and prevent neuronal cell death, but Professor Cohen-Armon has never used it to treat cancer. Of the groups receiving PJ34, one group was administered 5 times a week and the other 3 times a week. The third group, the control group, was injected with saline at a rate of 5 times per week.

Mice were given PJ34 and saline over a three-week period, and at the end of the study, the group receiving PJ34 five times a week showed a decrease in tumor size of about 40%. In addition, when 30 days after treatment with PJ34, pancreatic cancer cells in the mouse were examined, pancreatic cancer cells were reduced by 80 to 90% in both groups receiving PJ34. It turns out. The results showed that PJ34 significantly reduced human-derived pancreatic cancer cells in mice. In addition, in the group that received PJ34 5 times a week, it was reported that the tumor disappeared completely on the 56th day after the start of treatment in one mouse.

'PJ34 penetrates the cell membrane, but only affects human cancer cells. This molecule causes abnormalities in the replication of human cancer cells, resulting in rapid growth,' said Cohen-Armon. Cell death occurs, so it can be said that the proliferation of cancer cells itself has led to the death of cancer cells. '

In addition, the research team claimed that PJ34 had an exclusive effect on human pancreatic cancer cells and not other cells or benign cancer cells. During a series of studies, no significant changes such as side effects and weight gain were observed in each mouse, and abnormal behavior was not confirmed. “Efficient eradication of malignant cells against human pancreatic cancer cell grafts represents a new model for pancreatic cancer treatment,” the team commented.

In an experiment conducted in parallel with this study, the research team found that PJ34 also works efficiently on multiple aggressive cancer cells other than pancreatic cancer. Prof. Cohen-Armon said that in future studies he would like to use a larger animal to see the effect of PJ34 and ultimately to test the therapeutic effect on humans.
