What are the points that people who say “presentation is not good at it” or “stress is only stress” should overcome in order to overcome weaknesses?

Dr. Mathilde His , a postdoctoral researcher who has made great mistakes in the past two presentations, was able to overcome the weakness by repeating trial and error. For those who are not good at speaking in public, His summarizes the points for a successful presentation.

His first presentation was given to professors in the first year of the doctoral program. However, the announcement at this time was too much for the end, so the end was rushed, and I couldn't get research funds after all. The second time was when I made a presentation in front of the professors about the project I was working on, but my voice shuddered with tension, giving me the impression that I thought I would still cry.

His experience of “relaxing and speaking” after this experience seems to finally allow him to “speak in time” and “speak calmly”. However, when I spoke to the general public at another opportunity, I noticed that although I was able to speak calmly, nothing was communicated to the audience.

His, who thought that “it can't be just exposed to information,” asked people for advice, added photos and animations to slides, removed text, wrote scripts, and repeated rehearsals.

When this effort came to fruition, and His gave a presentation after that, the audience seemed to understand visibly. When asked questions from the audience, His says he understood they got something from the presentation.

His as of 2019 feels a little stressful about giving presentations, but welcomes the opportunity to speak in public. His points are the following 4 points as points of presentation.

◆ 1: Collect, organize and summarize information
It is important to focus the presentation on the most important key messages so that the audience's awareness is always directed to the presentation. Each slide and each word must be carefully selected to convey the message. It is also important to have slides for questions and discussions.

◆ 2: “Show” instead of “Write”
If all that needs to be said is on the slide, the presenter is relieved, but not for the audience. People like to listen to stories and make interesting discoveries from graphs and photos. They should distinguish between what should be written on the slide and what should not be written, and try not to fill it with letters.

◆ 3: Preparation
You need to be prepared to tell a story about your research. “Let's design visual elements carefully and practice speech,” says His. If you can find a friend who will be the rehearsal listener, one way is to see where the presentation is easy to communicate and what is bad. With careful preparation, you can give presentations in time and help reduce stress.

◆ 4: Learn from others, but only in your own way
If you want to improve your way, it is very good to get inspiration from your favorite presentation or try a new approach to gain confidence. However, when starting a new thing, it ’s important to seek feedback from a co-worker or supervisor.
