If you run to Hawaii Kilauea volcano where you can go by car one year after a record eruption, it looks like this

Hawaii

Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island is a national park with two volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Kilauea . Mount Kilauea erupted in 2018, causing residents in eastern Hawaii to be evacuated, and most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was banned. One year later, in 2019, I actually got on a car to see how far I could go in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Depart from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Oahu to Hilo International Airport on Hawaii Island. Between airports, it takes about 50 minutes by direct flight.

Waikiki Beach going away

And when you look at the island of Hawaii from the sky, it looks like this. I could see that deep forests were growing thicker than I did on Oahu.

Arrived at Hilo International Airport.

On Hawaii, unlike Oahu, there are not so many public transportation facilities for sightseeing, so you can choose between booking a tourist company or renting a car yourself. This time I will rent a car and move. There are several rental car companies on the grounds of Hilo International Airport, so you can rent as soon as you arrive.

The following images are borrowed cars. In addition, when driving a car on the island of Hawaii, it is basically OK if you have a Japanese driver's license, but it is recommended to obtain an

international driver's license in case of trouble in the field .

This time, when booking a car with Japanese car navigation, the following cases were given by the receptionist.

The main body of the navigation is a smartphone

Mount and weight to attach a smartphone

Place the weight with the mount on top of the dashboard to secure the smartphone.

That's why I started. In Hawaii, the right-hand traffic is the opposite of Japan, so it feels a little different from Japan.

It is about 47 km from Hilo International Airport to the Kilauea Visitor Center in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, about 50 minutes by car. Basically, it's not a particularly complicated route as it just goes on highway 11.

When you leave the city, you will not be able to see the houses and utility poles all at once. Since the monotonous scenery continues, we recommend that you take a break.

Arrived at

The Volcano Store in front of Kilauea Visitor Center. Most drinks are not sold in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so this is the last time to buy drinks.

Arrived at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If an individual enters by rental car, he / she must pay 25 dollars (about 2700 yen) per person at the entrance.

The Kilauea Visitor Center is located just after the entrance gate.

A huge Hawaiian model was placed outdoors.

In addition to exhibits related to the nature of Kilauea volcano, the museum also showed images of the Kilauea volcano eruption that occurred in 2018. Japanese maps and information are also available, so it is recommended that you get them here.

The Kilauea Visitor Center also provides information on the day's volcanic activity and the appearance of lava. Unfortunately, it was raining on the day of the park visit, saying that there is no activity in lava throughout the island of Hawaii.

First, follow the road called 'Crater Rim Drive' from the Kilauea Visitor Center to the northwest. About 5 minutes arrived at Steam Benz near the Kilauea US Army camp. The following movie shows the appearance of steam from a hole opened in the ground, and the caldera seen from the observation deck overlooking the huge Kilauea caldera in the back of Steam Benz.

An observatory with a panoramic view of Steam Benz and Kilauea Caldera where steam constantly spouts-YouTube

You can see white steam blowing from the fields spreading around. However, unlike Jigokudani in Japan, there was no such thing as the smell of sulfur.

And the vast Kilauea caldera spreading under the eyes. Far from the camera frame, it's so large that it can't even fit in the field of view, and the caldera occupies all the scenery you can see.

Originally, you can go deeper than this Kilauea US military camp, but this day ends with the fact that sulfur dioxide gas was detected in the future. In active volcanoes, Kilauea volcanoes may detect toxic volcanic gas everywhere, and areas that are prohibited from entering may be designated by day. So I decided to go back to the south of Kilauea Volcano.

Since most of the lava erupted from Kilauea volcano flows to the southern part of Hawaii Island, unlike the north side where the field spread all over, the south side appears to suddenly melt and harden in the forest. Target.

The following movie is playing at double speed the place running on the south side of Kilauea. If you ran for a while in a place where trees were thick, suddenly there were no trees around, and a black swirling lava spread out.

There is literally no tree as far as you can see, so you can see the horizon. Since there are almost no three-dimensional objects around you, you may not know the speed of experience while driving a car.

I stopped at the “Mauna Ulu Lava Flow” that is less than 30 minutes from Kilauea Visitor Center and walked around the lava area. The Mauna Ulu lava flow is from lava flow from 1969 to 1974, and a trekking course is also installed.

On the ground, there were many places where high-viscosity lava flowed in folds and carved into wrinkles.

There are innumerable small holes in the surface of the rolling rock that are formed by the gas escape when the magma cools and hardens.

No matter where I walked, the lava was just spreading, and I felt like I was walking alone in a world that had collapsed.

There are many other small craters and lava flows that you can stop and see each time.

The road called Keauhou Trail, which runs west from the Mauna-Ulu lava flow, is not possible to enter by car. It is a trekking course, and many people are walking on foot.

The forest is so thick that you can't believe it's in the same area as the lava flow where there were no trees.

I ran about 10 minutes further south from the Mauna ul lava flow, and after going on the road called Chain of Craters Road, I could see the sea in the distance. In addition, the light rain that continued from the airport was interrupted around here, and it turned into nice weather.

The south side of Mount Kilauea has a steep slope and the road has many curves. The following image is an area called Alanui Kahiko (Old Road), which is about 15 minutes from the Mauna Ulu lava flow. In the past, the road ahead was poorly paved and it was very difficult to drive by car, and it seems that some rental car companies included bans on entry into the contract, but paving was done again I was able to run comfortably without any problems.

After seeing the sea, I continued running and arrived at the Haley Sea Arch, the southern tip of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It took about 45-50 minutes by car from Kilauea Visitor Center. In addition, there are almost no toilets between Kilauea Visitor Center and Horay Sea Arch, so those who are interested should use the visitor center beforehand.

It seems that the lava flow until 1986 spreads beyond this, but because the road was blocked by the lava in 2003, invasion of cars was prohibited. You can go on foot, but ...

There was a notice that 'Volcanic plumes can harm your health and can be life threatening.'

In addition, a notice to prohibit drones was also found.

The Horay Sea Arch faces the Pacific Ocean, but is a quay made of lava rather than a sandy beach.

Only lava, the sea and the sky jump into the eyes. The sight that is hard to see even in Japan, which is the same volcanic power, is a tremendous scale, so that you can stand up on the spot and watch it. There were several tourists around me who were just overwhelmed by the power and could only stand and watch.

The black soil formed of volcanic ash and lava is not grainy and feels rough. Because it is dry and does not contain water, it is quite light.

On the signboard saying 'Hawaii was born here', a picture of lava that blows out is drawn.

There were also large crevices everywhere that reminded us of magma erupting by actually tearing the ground. Thick lava formations are rolling up as much as human power is impossible.

There are tears everywhere that seem to fall off when you step off. The feet are very bumpy and difficult to walk, so if you want to stroll around here, you need to wear comfortable shoes like sneakers.

Looking at the cross-section of the fissure, a stratum of lava piled up over the years was visible.

Under the quay along the sea, you can see the Pacific Ocean rushing and scattering white splashes. The following movie is a place to look under the quay with

GoPro HERO7 . The quay is shaved by the rushing waves.

The west side of the Holey Sea Arch, which cannot be driven by car, can be seen in the distance. If the activity of the volcano is active, you can see the “Ocean Entry” where a lava lava flows into the sea and generates a large amount of water vapor. Also, depending on the timing, it seems that you can see the lava up close, and it is a pity that the bad luck that came on the day when lava activity was not seen.

The state of the ocean entry where lava flows out can be seen in the following movie. It is said that there are tours that can be seen on the ocean entry from the sea.

Information about Kilauea volcano activity from 2016 to 2018 was added.

On the way back from the Haley Sea Arch to the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, if you run up the hill, there is a strong slope and there is nothing around you, so the experience is as if the car is rising in the blue sky I was able to.

Kilauea Volcano, which erupted in 2018, has almost recovered after a year, and most can be driven by car. By hiring a car from Hilo International Airport, we were able to enjoy the great outdoors of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in about 4 hours. You can experience the power of nature that cannot be seen in Japan, which is a small country, so if you have a car license, this is a must-see spot.

However, because nature is the opponent, there are places where you can not enter in the area that you can see on the day, or you may not be able to see the lava flowing out as you see on TV.
