What is the cause of the possibility that both male and domestic dogs' fertility may decline?

A researcher from the UK announced the results of a study saying that both male male dogs and their male owners showed decreased sperm quality and reduced fertility. The decline in fertility between the dog and owner may have been caused by the dog and man sharing the same living environment.

Richard Lee, a veterinarian at the University of Nottingham, has discovered that dog sperm quality has declined significantly over the past decades. “In the case of dogs, sperm motility was reduced by 30%. Interestingly, this phenomenon is also observed in human sperm,” Lee said.
“There are so many chemicals that can affect our health. Because dogs share the environment of their home with humans, we thought they would be exposed to the same chemicals as humans. “The impact of dogs can be reflected in humans,” says Lee. So, a research team led by Lee analyzed sperm samples collected from their dogs to see if some chemicals could be detected.
Researchers, many household products are used in phthalic acid is based plasticizer DEHP and (Bis 2-ethylhexyl), carcinogen PCB 153 two chemical substance called detection. According to Lee, these two pollutants were also detected in dog food.
DEHP is a substance used to make plastics soft and hard to break, and has been detected in carpets, children's plastic toys, and dog toys. Humans may also be affected by DEHP by consuming food that has been stored in plastic containers and cooked in a microwave oven. PCBs are used in electronic devices, paints, plastics, and rubber products. In the 1970s, the danger was widely known to the world and its use was banned in many countries. However, even 40 years after being banned, PCBs will still be detected around us.

So, when sperm samples were collected from men living in the UK and their dogs and exposed to levels of DEHP and PCBs that were detected in the home environment, both sperm were significantly less motile and related to reduced fertility. It was found that DNA damage was caused. In other words, humans and dogs can be similarly reduced in fertility by the same level of chemicals.
“The results of this survey show that chemicals commonly used in home and workplace environments can cause sperm quality to decline in both men and dogs sharing the same environment. ”
