Interview with Hiroshi Takigawa of Tatsunoko Production who created Akbi who shows success in the movie 'Pandora and Akbi' even after 50 years of film work

Akbi first appeared in ' Haktion Daimaoh ', and then it was a popular character with two protagonist works, ' Abi- chan! ' And ' Abi Girl '. Mr. Hiroshi Ayukawa, an adviser to Tatsunoko Production who was involved in the birth, has heard a variety of stories.

This time, I think that Akbi will appear in a new movie called 'Pandora and Akbi', and we should be able to focus on the 50th anniversary story of 'Haktion Daimaoh'. Suddenly, the material at the time of production of 'Haktion Daimaoh' (initial project book), 'Akvi Moth It was written. As a result, I became a daughter, but how did it change?

G:
I see.

At first, I thought that it would be interesting to have the setting of “When a sneeze comes out, a wizard comes out and that person comes home”. But it was the character design that was difficult. When I said to Mr. Tatsuo Yoshida that 'The Hakhon Daimaoh is a sorcerer, is coming out of the cage and looks scary at first glance, but what about a kind person?' I Production started in the form where Kang and the Duke were added there, and at first there was no acne.

Most of the time, I have to draw around 4000 videos in one story, so if I'm drawing more and more, there are complaints from the agency along the way (laughs)
G:
I have already drawn.
Kamogawa:
Including the broadcaster, the other party's opinion was, 'The character of this Great Demon Lord is a little scared, and even if it is a sorcerer, children may not be able to get along?' That being said, there is a part that thinks that this is not so either, and while I think that 'I am troubled', the video advances rapidly, and nearly 2000 pieces are finished. We talked about 'How shall we do?' And we made our best to 'will be stopped now' and 'Let's change Mr. Yoshida'.
G:
Wow ... awfully.
Kamogawa:
I can't fix it with an eraser, so everything I drew can not be used anymore (laughs) So I designed a new character. The face seems to have turned the light bulb over. When the body and nose were all unified with the motif like a light bulb, and the beard was changed in shape, there was a fear, a size, but it became humorous. I showed it to the agent, and I decided to start over again. At that time, the loss was hard, but it was still good because I stopped there. It will be difficult if it is a film. However, there is a little more trouble in small places, such as the favorite of the Great Devil.
G:
It was said that it was croquette at first.
Kamogawa:
When I was dubbed, I was told, 'Aren't there any people who will be happy with croquettes now?' So, I was just starting to serve hamburg at school lunch, so I decided to make it hamburg. This was an idea from the voice actor. The picture depicting the croquette is just brown and I don't know if it's fried or baked (laughs)
G:
(Laughs) I see.
Kamogawa:
'Hamburgh' is a place that looks like hamburger, and there are not so many cuts, so everyone was convinced that 'Let's make hamburger'. It really feels like it's getting done. The work of Tatsunoko Production is an original that has no original manga, so to speak, 'Like it' (laughs). If it is inconvenient, I am doing orbit correction. I do not think that the end is also from the beginning. But when it comes to a feature film, it's about a year, and when it comes to four or five lines before it's time to finish it comes a mysterious and good idea. What I thought was 'only that kind of thing' until now is an important news item. There is also a place to fix, but there is something.
G:
From among the things that have been scattered a lot, things that are actually like this are collected.
Kamogawa:
It is difficult to have to think about one story and one story in the original. I talk with the scenario writer hard, but it is like a quiz like 'Please assemble it' given the material. The main character is such a character, there is a large demon king, and there is such a thing called the Duke of Bull, can you not talk an interesting thing? What There are two 15-minute talks in one broadcast of Haktion Daimaoh, so there are a lot of numbers anyway. Even if it is 30 minutes or 15 minutes, from the viewpoint of writing a story, it does not change as a character side, but because there are a large number of items, it was necessary to have a lot of news items. I ask everyone to gather, make a simple synopsis like 'How about something like this?' And 'What kind of something like that,' and let me make a scenario that 'This is going to be good'. Enter the storyboard from there and go into the video. It was also an original pleasure.
If there is a manga original, it is fine to pick it up from the original and write it for the animation, but Tatsunoko has many originals in particular, so if you do not finish it, you do not know if it is interesting or not interesting. If you think about it, I think you used to broadcast well. I'll make it before the other side's order comes (laughs). I will show you where I was about half done, but the sales would have been too hard for the other side. The sponsors would have been suspicious (laughs). Mr. Tatsuo Yoshida was famous as a manga artist, but at the time of the anime, Hakuon Daimao had a small number of works.
G:
It is still before ' Science Ninja Corps Gatchaman ' and ' New Creation Casshern '.
Kamogawa:
The animators were quite pleased and gathered. Mr. Tatsuo Yoshida is a cool person in action, and his muscles and skeletons are drawn realistically, and drawing is difficult with 'Mach GoGoGo' etc ... If it was 'Haktion Daimaoh', it had the advantage of being relatively easy to draw. The idea is that it was difficult instead. Even if the character is made, there is no laughter seed. The text of the scenario is not very interesting. The person you are writing may be interesting, but there is a gap with the sense of laughter that the customers are looking at, or the way of thinking is different if you try to make a picture ......
G:
How do you fit those gaps?
Kamogawa:
It can not be helped anymore.
G:
I can not help (laughs)
Kamogawa:
I wondered if they would be laughing at some later (lol). I was also drawing a gag cartoon, so I was allowed to fix the scenario a little bit, but if I changed too much, the scenario writer also wrote with feelings, 'Why I skipped this line It is said that. There was a lot of hard work, but the promise that 'Hachon Daimaoh will come to the house of a person who has made a mistake' and 'I can not return to a trap without having to make a mistake again' is wonderfully interesting. As the character gets used to it, things like 'I see, something like this' came to an end. Toru Ohira plays and has kindness, and it's a bit overwhelming and funny, but he's also scared. It might have been a daughter named Akbi, thinking that the child might pull out because of that fear.
G:
When the character was created, the form of the Great Demon Lord was born hard, how was the appearance of the akvi?
Kamogawa:
I think that Akbi was surprisingly clear. I can't remember who I drew, I wonder if it was Mr. Tatsuo Yoshida? About 20 years ago from now on, Abi, who was called 'Abibite! Akbi-chan,' made a leading character, and this is because Shizuka Yoshida, the daughter of Tatsuo Yoshida , is doing character design . The eyeballs are bigger than the old ones, and there are slight differences, but the image does not change at all. Mr. Suzuka loves Akbi and still paints. The story can be changed in many ways by having one girl in it. In the case of an akbi, you can transform into a bird or butterfly and fly.
These characters don't need to be kept in mind, so it would be nice to have them come out like this movie. Haktion Daimaoh was also put on a commercial for drugs, a live-action drama was made, and I think it is a good character depending on how it is used. It is great to say that it is still being used at the 50th anniversary of the broadcast (laughs)
G:
This time, many characters of other Tatsunoko works such as Doronjo, Takeshi Mifune, Hitotsusuke-kun , and others appear in 'Pandora and Akbi' in addition to Akbi.
Kamogawa:
I think this is a good way of collaboration. I wonder if it's a one-shot hita-kun or a 'Nazo monster' or how many old-fashioned characters come out and get involved. There is a sense of security that it is all right if you even see the world. I will use the magic of the akbi.
G:
While the movie where Akbi is active has been released, what do you hear as 'Next', are there any other characters you would like to see in the collaboration?
Kamogawa:
It is the story that there is a collaboration partner, but what about Casshern and so on. That world seems to be expanding. What better would I add to Casshern and Frender's combination, hopefully there? For Tatsunoko, I think action was one pillar, so I would like to make another great action. There are a lot of characters that can be remembered by drawing well if the characters of Tatsunoko stand out, so I think that there is room for expansion. This time, I'm out until I hit Perak-kun.
G:
I was surprised by honesty (Laughs)
Kamogawa:
In that sense, there are a lot of characters that may come out. If it is a work of the production committee method, you have to make it while consulting in various committees, but there is a work of the company right in various ways, and Tatsunoko has the strength of being able to freely. It must be discovered more and more.
G:
I am looking forward to the next one taking this work as the first installment.
Kamogawa:
There are ways other than movies, so I would like to have great expectations for the plan. When we were working there was really only television, but then films have become rarer, and have spread to other media as well. Now there are many entrances. On the other hand, there are places where it is not easy to make a video, but I think it's no good if you don't try it. It's painful, but I have to do difficult things. There is not much progress when doing the same thing. Instead of the category of the animation world that I've always seen, I want you to break it down and show something that is astonishing 'Eh !?'.
G:
Outside of what I've seen.
Kamogawa:
Tatsunoko Pro has a long list of partners, so I hope it will continue.
G:
'Gatchaman' is an episode that I was told at the time that it was better to watch than animators.
Kamogawa:
It is better to look at it (laughs). Toriumi has been visiting Tatsunoko since I was a student, and I joined the company soon after I graduated. It was a time when I was playing ' Space Ace ' and touching 'Mach GoGoGo' for a while. About three years later, the project that came out was “Science Ninja Corps Gatchaman”. When you asked who to direct the director, Chokai-kun was the one who played the role. He did his best to be able to do his best for one year, but after two years of good ratings, he said, 'One more year !?'
So by the time of the sequel ' Gatchaman II, ' I was not able to make Tokai-kun anymore, and no one else did, so I decided to stand by 'It's provisional.' It is serious, Gatchaman .... Even though I was making it, I was about to open a hole and borrowed the first 'Gatchaman' negative and made one. This was scolded by the agency, but there is a story that the anger has stopped because the audience rating was good.
G:
Episode 9 'Berckkatse of the Fall' is it? After all numbers would be so good.
Kamogawa:
Berg Katze was popular, so it was a good name for injury.
G:
'Gatchaman II' was when I was raising young people including Mr. Oshii .
Kamogawa:
At that time, the director continued to be able to make it without making a request from outside. I was asked by the university graduates to bring up new people because this is no longer good. It was four people, Mamoru Oshii, Mizuho Nishikubo , Koichi Mashimo , and Hinode Ueda . I asked them to do it immediately, but because they were smart, they were quick to learn by watching the rush that the seniors made, watching videos and movies. It was also good to tell the people of the animator to “draw this” and “move it this way”. The storyboards are drawn on the storyboards, so if you look at it, it's a design that you can see how it works. However, Mr. Oshii sometimes said, 'Is this healthy? Joe?' But the finish is pretty. How to move, how to use the staff would have been good.
G:
A lot of great people are coming out of Tatsunoko. This time, general director Ogura Hiraku-san is also in the second year, so it may be that a great person has come out again.
Kamogawa:
I think that it is good that a work succeeds by all means.
