According to the Ministry of Health in New Mexico, USA, users are infected with a treatment called 'Vampire Facial' provided by a spa in the city of Albuquerque. Vampire facials are made by suspending platelets separated from the user's blood in plasma and applying or injecting them into the face. The Ministry of Health reports that one of the users of the VIP Spa offering this treatment had a blood-borne infection after the procedure. According to the investigation, the infection is thought to have been caused by the process of piercing the skin with a needle. Dr. Michael Landen, an epidemiologist in New Mexico, believes this has happened due to improper needle management and disposal.
The Ministry of Health recommends that users who have undergone vampire facials or injections between May and June 2018 be tested for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. However, details of what type of infection the patient who reported the infection had and what treatment they were receiving were not disclosed.
