Thank you for your time today.

Mr. Christopher McCully (McCully):
I also have GH 4, it's a nice camera. (Look at the GH 4 that was on the desk)

G:
Thank you very much. I want to move on to a question quickly. Mission: The Impossible series is the 5th work this time, but what is the difficult point in making the sequel?

McCully:
The most difficult thing is to make a better work than the previous one. Mission: The Impossible series is a work that has been made by name supervisors who are called masters until now, and they are finished individually. It is the biggest challenge in making sequels as making a work suitable for lining up on the same shelf as such a series of works.

G:
In a scene breaking into a data center in Morocco, the mission of invading a place where it can not invade is thought that it seemed to be an impossible scene. Which one of the scenes of breaking the "digital safe" from underwater is whether we thought about the intrusion method first, or thought of the data center facility first?

McCully:
The order of ideas is different every time depending on the scene, but in the data center scene, our production designers came up with a set of "digital safes" and decided to present to us. Then I thought how Ethan would invade, but I wanted to "make it a scene underwater" from the beginning. So I decided to make Escan a dive underwater and take the disc back to a long scene without cuts, first by animation called Previz (animate) with no cutSequenceI tried to make it.

But when I saw the animation, I felt that Ethan invading the data center was dangerous. So I noticed that Benji and Ilsa should be added to the scene, so the idea of a long underwater scene without cut was sacrificed. Therefore it is a fact that there was a concern that it might not be able to put out the sense of reality "I get drowned in the water" that I was trying to make out by taking underwater scenes without cutting. It was an imminent schedule that the present work was completed five days before the premiere release, so to tell the truth, I and Tom did not see this scene of the completed version until I saw the premier with the audience.

So we saw the audience reaction of the audience with a premier, and I realized it was "successful" for the first time. When I made this movie, Tom first told me, "I want to make a movie that feels like a crowd together with the pressure of film making." The pressure that the team felt · The real atmosphere born on the scene including the chaos and humor of the work site is a movie that you can experience as it is.

G:
In this work Tom Cruise himself did a number of actions without a stunt. It is dangerous to use himself from the director's point of view, so it is necessary to remove Tom, but did Tom want to do it? How do you persuade Tom at such times?

McCully:
I can not persuade Tom. In the action scenes, safety measures and preparations are thoroughly made to ensure safety. Even if you use a stunt on it, you can not help it if it is impossible for anyone to use it, but if Tom is told from himself if it's a scene that "can be done with a stunt". In the scene where Tom said "do" but in the scene which did not do, in the scene where the subject was too fast and the camera could not get close to it and the problem of the equipment side such as "I do not know if Tom is doing it" or the like has occurred, abandoned the idea I had something to do. Even if Tom is doing it or a stuntman does it does not matter, you do not have to take risks by force.

G:
I heard that in the car action scene in Morocco that Tom himself drove himself, it was a dangerous shooting as he could roll over several times. How many BMW did you make Oshaka if you kidding me?

McCully:
I think it was 13 cars. In addition, BMW's motorcycle has made 25 Oshaka. (While doing a gesture to be cut fingers)

G:
Was it more than I expected?

McCully:
movies"Outlaw"When I did it, I made 9 cars, but this time I understood to shoot more intense action scenes, so I did not need more than I expected (lol)

G:
I think that a lot of irregular things will occur in shooting, but did you ever get a better scene than the one I was thinking as a result of the irregular falling in a good direction?

McCully:
That's right, I did not have it this time, but when I was outlaw, I had a scene with a good accident. In the scene where it hit a barrel when coming out of the tunnel, it was supposed to have proceeded as it was, but it stopped and conversely it was good and it was officially used. At Rogue Nation, I made plans carefully, but changes occurred many times in the field. There was something I had to sacrifice the idea by saying "I can not do this by all means". Actually it was enough that I could not understand what the story would be like because of that.

That's why I was thinking about car chase "This is not enough scales, is not it more necessary?" I was thinking it was because the car action scene was cut too long at a later time. One thing I can say is that I was happy being done without breaking the car too much (laugh). There is a mystery, but in the scene of the motorcycle chase, I could not take the raise up of the racer chasing Irsa. As racers and Ilsa were wearing full face helmets, in fact the ups of racers are making CG with cuts taken by Irsa. As a result, Ilsa will be chasing Irsa in the bike chase scene.

G:
Mr. McCully is engaged in screenplay and director of Rogue Nation, but depending on the work there are times when he is responsible for director only and when he / she is in charge of both script and director like this work. Please tell me the difference at this time.

McCully:
That's a very good question! Writing a script of a movie is a task of putting together the vision of various people in one eye. The director is the task of adapting everyone's work to their own vision. It is two jobs located completely opposite, but what is in common is "storytelling". Each one needs a different skill, and if you actually supervise a work that wrote the script, you can not defend yourself as a script writer. It is also important to ignore it while setting the script as an indicator or guideline. However, it is difficult to ignore the script that you wrote yourself.

G:
It is the last question. Do you have any advice, etc. for students aiming to be a film director, such as what should be done during school days?

McCully:
It's also a very good question! What I should tell them is not to wait for a chance to make a movie myself, but to start right now. When I started making movies 20 years ago, I did not have the tools to make movies easily, but now I can do anything. Even though I wanted to make a movie then I could not take a picture without permission. This era is an era in which you can do screenplays, as well as directing, filming, editing, and distributing them all by yourself. As many pitfalls, there are many people who think that if they do not receive money from someone, they think "they are not official supervision", but if you truly love movie making and you make money for you, you will emerge . In short, "Do not get permission to film a movie".
