JetBrains Research has been conducting ongoing surveys on the developer ecosystem, and the Developer Ecosystem Survey 2026 marks its 10th anniversary. AI coding agents are rapidly gaining popularity among professional developers, with 90% using them at least once a week and 68% using them daily as of May-July 2026. 'Professional developers' refers to various professions involved in coding and programming, with approximately 90% being developers, programmers, and software engineers. The survey covers eight language regions (English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French, and Portuguese), and global representativeness was ensured through regional allocation and statistical weighting adjustments.

The graph above shows that GitHub Copilot and Claude Code are both tied for the top spot in terms of awareness, at 79% as of May-July 2026, with Claude Code in particular showing a rapid increase in awareness recently. Furthermore, despite having the massive OpenAI brand, only 27% of developers were aware of Codex as of January 2026, but this figure rose to 65% between May and July 2026.

Claude Code: Its usage rate, which was 3% in early 2025, reached 39% by mid-2026, nearly double that of GitHub Copilot, propelling it to the top spot.
GitHub Copilot: While it maintained a stable usage rate of approximately 29% to 31% from mid-2025 to early 2026, the most recent survey shows it has fallen to 21%.
• OpenAI Codex: Its usage rate, which was 0% in early 2025, has rapidly increased to 16% by mid-2026.
Open-source solutions like OpenCode and Google Antigravity have gained a certain level of adoption and recognition, and JetBrains AI, which coordinates multiple agents, is also being used to some extent. These trends suggest that agent-based software development is likely to advance further in the future, and are expected to bring about significant changes in developers' toolkits and practices.
