GitHub is down worldwide



On the evening of August 17, 2026, Japan time, various GitHub services went down. The issue has been resolved as of the time of writing.

GitHub announced at 10:40 PM on August 17th that they were investigating reports of performance issues affecting some GitHub services. Performance degradation was observed in API requests, Actions, Webhooks, and other areas.

Subsequently, multiple GitHub services were affected, resulting in an error rate of approximately 20% for web experience and API traffic, and an error rate of approximately 50% for archive downloads and raw repository content downloads.

Approximately one hour after the initial report on GitHub, Copilot also confirmed that the availability was reduced.

At 1:36 AM on August 18, GitHub reported, 'We have identified the problematic component and taken corrective action. We are seeing significant signs of recovery, but we are continuing to work towards a full service recovery, and the error rate remains slightly high.'

Although some lingering effects remained, GitHub reported the issue was resolved at 6:15 AM on the 18th. They stated that they would share the detailed analysis results as soon as they become available.
