During the testing period, Xbox Insider Program participants with an Xbox account will be able to stream their owned games for free, albeit with ads. However, players will be limited to one hour per session, regardless of their device or region.

The ads play before the game session begins, so the basic gameplay experience remains unchanged. Furthermore, choosing between ad-supported streaming play and regular Xbox gameplay is entirely optional.

This streaming play feature allows, for example, 'Xbox One users to play the latest games developed for Xbox Series X|S without having to purchase new hardware.' Xbox says that the free streaming play is 'particularly significant in areas where game consoles are difficult to obtain or expensive, and should provide a new way for more players to enjoy great games on devices they already own.'

Furthermore, Xbox stated, 'Advertising in the gaming industry has existed for decades, from in-game ads to free-to-play models. However, it hasn't always been designed with the player in mind. Properly implemented advertising can help reduce access costs. It should also provide new ways for players to participate in games without having to purchase streaming services in advance, and expand the user base through new ways of playing.'

Furthermore, Xbox has clarified the following points regarding its commitment to ad-supported services:

1: We start with the players. Advertising should create value.
2: We will not interrupt the flow of gameplay.
3. We apply the same quality standards to our advertisements as we do to our content.
4: We make it clear what constitutes advertising.
5. We strive to ensure that advertisements on each platform align with what players expect.

Xbox explained that it has learned from this test and will continue to make improvements based on player usage and feedback. Xbox's goal is simple: 'To make games more accessible to more people at a more affordable price.'

Incidentally, Matthew Ball, the chief strategy officer of Xbox, has previously cited 'making advertisements more acceptable within games' as a way to revitalize the gaming industry.
