Military-grade autonomous vertical take-off and landing aircraft 'Thunder' announced, capable of handling drone weapons.



Anduril , an American defense company founded by Palmer Luckey , known for developing the VR device Oculus Rift, and Archer Aviation , an American startup specializing in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft , have jointly announced Thunder , a series hybrid eVTOL platform designed for both defense and commercial applications.

Anduril and Archer Aviation unveiled the appearance and details of Thunder on July 20, 2026.




According to Anduril, the proliferation of drones has led to devastating human and mechanical losses in ground-based mobile warfare, making the area near the ground one of the most dangerous battlefields. Thunder was announced as the answer to this battlefield where speed, maneuverability, range, and the ability to deploy sufficient forces are all required at a high level. Based on a dual-use platform developed by Anduril and Archer Aviation, the Thunder incorporates the rapidly advancing electric propulsion technology and rotor design in the commercial VTOL sector into a newly designed airframe. By employing a 'series hybrid electric powertrain,' the Thunder achieves superior range and long endurance while also ensuring high controllability that allows for fine-tuned power optimization throughout the entire flight situation. Furthermore, the Thunder's 'dual tiltrotors' vary rotor speed according to the flight phase, maintaining high efficiency in all flight domains, reducing power requirements and fuel consumption during cruising, and contributing to improved survivability by reducing noise during low-altitude approaches to target areas.

Furthermore, the Thunder's tiltrotor configuration combines VTOL capabilities with the efficient cruising flight of fixed wings. As a result, it is not subject to the range limitations of conventional rotary-wing aircraft such as helicopters, and can operate without runways, meaning it can be operated from forward bases or makeshift landing sites that lack sufficient facilities.

Scott Manley , who posts videos about space and science on YouTube, analyzes that the true advantage of Thunder's 'hybrid electric' system lies in its 'ability to distribute power to the rotors without a gearbox.' Conventional helicopters require large and complex gearboxes and drive shafts to transmit engine power to multiple rotors, but these are heavy, difficult to maintain, and prone to failure. Electric aircraft only require sending power to the motors via cables, which greatly simplifies the process. However, batteries alone have low energy density, making long-distance flight difficult. Therefore, the idea is to use a 'series hybrid electric' system, which uses a generator to supply power during flight, to greatly extend the range while maintaining the benefits of electrification.




Thunder's primary missions include dropping long-range weapons of mass effect, providing fire support, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance, maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and supplying dangerous areas.

Furthermore, the Thunder is configured not only for defense purposes but also for various commercial applications such as air taxis. In the following post, the black-painted Thunder is for defense use, while the white-painted one is for commercial use.




Shane Arnott, Senior Vice President of Mobility Advantage at Anduril, said, 'Leveraging cutting-edge technology from the commercial eVTOL market in the defense sector, from performance to mass production, is crucial to Thunder delivering operational value to our customers. This all-new dual-use platform, co-developed with Archer, represents a significant leap forward in capabilities.'

Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer Aviation, said, 'This mission required us to redesign from scratch, rather than simply modifying existing aircraft to meet the needs of modern commercial and defense applications. So we collaborated with Anduril, taking an approach that re-examined the fundamental principles, and developed the most sophisticated vertical take-off and landing aircraft to date.' According to Goldstein, Anduril's Luckey proposed the concept of a multi-purpose autonomous aircraft to accompany attack and reconnaissance helicopters in 2024, and they have been designing Thunder together ever since.




Furthermore, Goldstein appeared at the Farnborough International Airshow held in the UK on July 20, 2026, and told CNBC that 'we are fully committed to obtaining air taxi certification and commencing operations by the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.' He stated that while the 2028 launch is an ambitious goal, he will do everything in his power to achieve it.

The development team has already conducted multiple flight tests using a full-scale demonstrator aircraft to demonstrate the core systems that make up Thunder's performance. Thunder's first flight is scheduled for 2027. Thunder's first commercial customer is expected to be announced in late July 2026.
